"The picture quality is amazing ... the footage is really sharp"

"For me the killer features though are 5.3k 8:7 ... Those all help a lot for editing."

"The result of that is that at 30 fps you get 3.3 megabits per frame, while at 60 fps you get just 1.6 megabit per frame. ... Shoot 30 fps, and you get a slight reduction in motion quality (which matters less than you think for driving, but might be very noticeable in say, mountain biking or FPV drone footage), but a boost in overall image quality in each frame."

"Lol, mine overheats all the time. I have to keep it in the shade when using it if it is remotely hot out. ... I'd probably overheat any camera in my use on a tripod in the middle of a sunny concrete skatepark filming for long periods of time. ... I've had the 8 9 and now have the 12. They all overheat after five minutes if its too hot out. ... + 80° F outside with no shade, it WILL overheat on me and shut down. Every time."

"The most important thing is that it is overheating. I need to film multiple hours at a time (3-4 at least. Would be better if it does even more)"

"Refreshing to see that action camera can actually be reliable and not crash and overheat all the time ... Gopro has always had a lot of overheating issues, corrupt files, crashing issues, super unresponsive UI, and horrible battery life. ... Constantly got those issues with gopro."

"they dont DELETE YOUR FOOTAGE FOR NO REASON ... from the hero -until the 12 black every single one at one point or another simply corrupted/deleted a whole days of videos. ... i will not give GoPro another single $ until they figure out wtf happens where it corrupts/deletes videos. its a useless camera if it cant save a video."

"my last gopro was the hero 8. i still have it but its doesn’t work as it constantly loses footage."

"8 is decent, just the 9 forward have a removable lens, so you can easily put on an ND filter, which I highly recommend if you're going to be in sunlight."

"it has a non removable front lens protector"

There’s larger sensors in the insta Ace Pro2 and the DJI Action 5 that handle low light conditions very well. I have the GoPro 8, 11, and the DJI Action 5 and I always grab the DJI over the GoPro for night work.

I’ve had 3 different generations (4,8,10 IINM). My main headache was reliable charging (bad contact, I guess), and starting. Thinking it should be all charged and have it die shortly or not start was super annoying. It could work great, or fail. I’m still getting used to trusting it, since it seems to be behaving.

r/goproIs low light performance improving or the same with new releases?

I have read that GoPro's low-light performance is limited. This is from my GoPro HERO 8 that I bought in February 2021. Are newer models noticeably better? https://reddit.com/link/1p4oeiu/video/375scg90q03g1/player I am content with my HERO 8 for my casual use. I have just bought a new battery for it. If I need to upgrade it, isn't it now the best time of the year in terms of price? What is normally the strongest reason to upgrade HERO 8 to HERO 13?

The video is from my morning run. I took a clip from a segment when I deliberately slowed down. I jog in the morning, even during international travels. I also ski in low light sometimes. This is from a night skiing scene video recoded with my HERO 8. For my casual use, I considered it acceptable. https://preview.redd.it/jrhtp9qn213g1.png?width=3793&format=png&auto=webp&s=d9d2e33cd713983fbf26ad5b206f6cc539f07277

I'd say give the GoPro HERO8 Black a try which will probably max out your budget but trust me it's a great camera, I had one for some time and switched to the Hero12 Black only because I found one with a really good deal. The 8 shoots in 4K, excellent stabilization (HyperSmooth 2.0) and you can put it into water up to 10 meters, so its a steal if you can get it second hand in a good condition. But if you want to spend less maybe the Akaso EK7000 Pro V2 might work for you since its cheap and last time I heard shoots 4K at 25fps, has basic stabilization and some other extra accessories. If not, you could try [10 Best Action Cameras to Invest in 2025](https://alaskanarrows.com/10-best-action-cameras-to-invest-in-2025/) could be helpful too! Hope this helps you in some way mate, cheers

Hero 8, 9, 10 user here. Go for Insta360. But if you’re looking between GoPro and dji, go for dji. In other news, I’m looking to sell my hero 10, if anyone is interested (Kolkata or vicinity) let me know. I’ve got all accessories and a boatload of additional stuff for it. Asking for 20k.

Just get an old GoPro. I have 8s that are still used for a variety of things and work decently well

Are you using a GoPro? I find that gopros really flatten terrain. The DJI and insta360 cameras do a much better job of showing verticality.

For what it’s worth, GoPro ushers know that jill was steep! I’m using an old GoPro hero 8 but will be moving to either DJI or insta360 soon.

A GoPro 7 or 8 then. I don't recommend less know action cameras brands like Akaso, not terrible but not great either. Sound quality is really bad and the image stabilization performance is inferior compared to the GoPro or the DJI Action cameras.

I would recommend a used GoPro 8 instead, it should be in your budget range. Usually Akaso and SJcam have decent video quality but the issue with those cameras are the bad video stabilization system, it's not as good as the GoPros. It can cause tremors like footage, wobbling and other issues, also the audio quality is not that great either.

r/scubaI analyzed 530+ posts on action cameras for diving (from feb 2026-2025)

I just went for a dive greatest with a GoPro, and for the 15th time the camera refused to turn on while in the water, and though it worked fine on the land (this is with a casing around it). I had this before, and unplugging the battery usually does it. But this is really hard in the waves while diving and not drowning  the camera. Anyway, I succeeded, took a photo, turned off the cam. Saw a great turtle, turned on the camera, and nothing. I was furious! I opened the cam again, and this time the battery protection fell into the water. I probably could have recovered it, but I've been making too many excuses to keep the worst camera I ever owned (Gopro Hero 8).  I will never ever buy anything from Gopro ever again, these cameras overheat, or simply don't turn on, and the image quality is average, at best. I'm going to try the Osmo, and hope that I don't have to write a similar post in a years time!
