"That said my IQ Air at level 2 is damn near silent. ... At its lowest setting (level 1), it achieves complete silence, making it ideal for bedroom use. ... When operated at level 2, while the sound becomes noticeable from the bed, it produces a different type of noise than the Levoit models - specifically, it lacks the characteristic "wooshing" sound that Levoit units tend to make. Sleeping with the unit at level 2 is still comfortable."

"quiet and powerful."

"1-2 are silent, 3 is quiet, 4 barely noticeable"

"My choice would be the IQAir, especially, for you, if you can do the multipack deal with one gas exchange and one Health Pro in the same room. ... Expensive, but I think you would get pristine air every 15 minutes, particularly on setting 6"

"It’s the only place my family can be when the allergies get really bad."

"in 1 day I went from a sore throat to clear breathing. ... The hyper hepa filter seems to really clear the air of small particles."

"IQ Air Health Plus Pro fun video to watch. It filters up to 100x smaller microns, (I believe .003 microns) than standard HEPA purifiers, which is in the Gases territory. ... What we should be worried is about all the chemicals in the air. Majority of homes are old and a lot of them still have potentially lead paints that release toxins in the air. Asbestos, styrene, formaldehyde, crude oil byproducts, plastic fumes, lead, iridium, uranium, etc."

"If you are sensitive or worried about VOCs they’re the best on the market because of the size of their filters. ... I’m recovering from a toxic mold exposure and (at the time of purchase) they were one of the only filters that captured those particles effectively."

"it does an incredible job filtering after-dinner “food smells” from the kitchen, too!"

"We have owned ours for close to 6 years now, and aside from replacing filters it works just as good as the first day."

"We have an IQ Air air purifier and again, its performance has been excellent over the past 20 years. No issues at all"

"I've had an IQAir Health Pro running non-stop for about 15 years now, and the only maintenance performed were regular filter changes."

"However there are so many chemicals in wildfire smoke, particularly if structures have burned, that they don't get everything. ... I am sensitive to terpenes and right now they don't help with the Camphor tree flowers. ... So they can greatly improve air quality but don't expect all VOCs to be removed from the air."

"But neither of them keeps up very well with serious VOC incursion."

"also the IQair and other high end ones tend to be lower CADR because they are higher in carbon filtration and require the lower CADR to effectively get rid of VOCs"

"I think the main difference is that the dyson actually projects the air and cleans the room whereas many other purifiers might have superior filtering technology but they don't actually get the clean air into the room away from the unit."

I have a OQ Air Health Pro Plus in my 1,100 square foot apartment with my cat. I've had zero issues with the unit and has improved myself and my cats asthma. My cat never gets any asthma attacks now.

If you want something in the 200-300 dollar range, then go with Coway Airmega that’s a very good option, budget I’d recommend Levoit Core 400S and for premium I’d recommend the IQair Health Pro Plus Air purifier, that thing is built like a tank!

The Health Pro Plus is definitely not 850 on their website but the regular non XE model is 949. Unless you're talking about the compact version in which case the XE has a newer fan motor and internet app connectivity. Whether you care about either of those things that's why they raised the price. The XE models have been on sale for a while now. It looks like the old Compact model is still available on Best Buys website if you care.

I have severe (toxic) mold exposure and respiratory issues. I do not have a diagnosis of asthma, however. I can’t recommend based on asthmatic needs, but I can recommend based on chronic conditions and personal use. My choice would be the IQAir, especially, for you, if you can do the multipack deal with one gas exchange and one Health Pro in the same room. Expensive, but I think you would get pristine air every 15 minutes, particularly on setting 6, and particularly if you use HEPA filtered household chore items (vacuum, dusters, etc.).

Maybe. I couldn’t answer as a medical professional, so that was just my best guess since OP wanted carbon filtration before the HEPA filter and this is the best system I could think of with the brand. I use the gas/HEPA singularly with IQAir, but it seems they need more robust filtration? Just the HPP works well for me and I’m in a wildfire-prone area.

I keep my IQAir on medium 24/7 and kick it up to the highest setting after housework or during weather advisories (smoke, wind, high particulate, etc). When I lived in the house I was exposed to toxic mold—after I found out about it, of course—I had several (different brand) purifiers on the highest setting 24/7, and though they looked like hell after switching out the filters about once a month, did an extremely good job with professional AQI tests in the interim before the landlord let me out of the lease.

No idea about Merv 16 since I just buy what they have so I don’t have to think about anything, lol, but I use and travel with their car filter—bringing it into hotel rooms and letting it filter in different areas before going inside. Not sure how well it filters all the air in the room, but it’s a relatively small space, so I’m willing to take the chance since otherwise there would be no filtration. I am thinking about buying one of their large round models for the same reason since it would be easier to store at the side of the car instead of a bulky IQAir and would know the filtration would be on point. We actually have two IQAirs: one upstairs and one downstairs. The lower level is far larger than the second level, but they both seem to do a good job, especially on the highest setting (it does an incredible job filtering after-dinner “food smells” from the kitchen, too!).

I run 3 filters, Austin and IQAIR, in each of 2 spaces - one 300 square feet the other 600 square feet. If the air is poor outside my Purple Air sensors will still show green. However there are so many chemicals in wildfire smoke, particularly if structures have burned, that they don't get everything. I am sensitive to terpenes and right now they don't help with the Camphor tree flowers. So they can greatly improve air quality but don't expect all VOCs to be removed from the air.

Second the IQAir, HealthPro Plus is a good one as it can take a carbon filter as well. The IQAir PF40 Coarse Dust Pre-Filter Pads are an inexpensive addition that will save your HEPA. They're around $35 for a 5pk.

IQAir HealthPro Plus is a good air purifier. Kinda pricey but can often find deals on them used as when it comes time to buy replacement filters just sell them instead. My place is small too, and if my particulates are high from cooking or whatever, the purifier brings it down to 0 on medium setting pretty quickly.

I got 3 used ones, and I’d highly recommend it. Got them during the LA fires and in 1 day I went from a sore throat to clear breathing. The hyper hepa filter seems to really clear the air of small particles. And they’re so simple they really seem like bullet proof industrial units. Like the computer is just a little unit on the top that can be replaced if needed. The real price is the filters, so I just go super cheap on the base used unit, and add new filters. The new ones of course are great too… and I hear come with 2 years warranty. Overall I couldn’t be happier.

Odors always need high carbon content - Austinai, Healthmate, IQair HealthPro Plus and GC Gas all measure in lbs of carbon, so it makes sense that this was the one that worked for me. Decent list I made that includes a few other options: [https://housefresh.com/air-purifier-for-vocs/](https://housefresh.com/air-purifier-for-vocs/)

Why do some HEPA air purifiers cost $1000-$1500 and others under a $100? They all contain a HEPA filter but, the size of the filter, the gaskets, the fan, the design, is the difference between a $79.00 Honeywell at HD or a $1,200.00 IQAir Health Plus. I have tested the efficiency of many of the air purifiers on the market with a particle counter. Even the cheap ones help, and I would recommend the IQAir only if the person was seriously compromised. Try to find something in between you like. Change the filters outside while wearing a N95.

I have 2 healthpro plus air purifiers. Once I saw the filters that go into them, it became immediately clear why the cheaper ones I've bought in the past didn't work well. A single filter on these things weigh more than the only filter that goes in most air purifiers and there are 3 of them. Super expensive, though.

I've used iqair and alen with quite a bit of success for both. I looked at some of the ones other mentioned and my advice is skip over any of the tabletop ones (that applies to the brands I suggested). I would definitely consider iquair to be bifl. I've yet to have my alen purifier experience any issues over 4 years of daily use, but I'm not sure I'd say it's bifl quality. You'll have to check the energy efficiency for each, but in general, a bigger fan will be more efficient. Whichever one you get, figure out the lowest setting that will cycle the air enough to make your roommate comfortable to save money and keep the volume down. It'll be trial and error, most likely. Having a schedule option will help reduce energy usage. Finally, and the bad news: air purifiers are basically a fan blowing air through some filters, and the more effective filters tend to block more air, leading to lower efficiency. It's a trade-off: efficiency for effectiveness.
