"It's also absolutely unbreakable ... I have it since 3 years, done ton of afters, street parties, beach parties, etc, with it. Saltwater, beers, dust, sand, falling on the ground, etc, nothing broke or deteriorated it the slightest, and I am a pro for breaking anything technological."

"The massive Hotel vestibule makes a big difference practically and psychologically. ... I keep going back to the CS Hotel because of that fabulous vestibule. You can sit on a chair inside it. You can scatter your gear around. You can leave it open as a welcoming large entrance."

"Free standing so it works on the granite or in the desert ... Poles are attached to the inner tent becasue it's fully freestanding. ... I hardly use the fly and sometimes I only bring the fly as it can be set up without the inner tent like a tarp set up."

"It's easy to set up, and freestanding so hard to pitch wrong."

"love how easy it is to set up"

"I just ordered and received one and it's been the worst out of box experience I've ever had. ... The minimal quick start and lights on the device didn't match the documentation and it went downhill from there. ... It wouldn't connect to the app, then I eventually got it connected manually and it wouldn't play because it needed an update. ... Of course the update would fail to install every time. ... I spent an hour with support to learn that the battery needed to be at a minimum charge level to update. ... The device doesn't have a way to determine the state of charge without using the app, and won't connect to the app if the charge state is too low. ... In retrospect a simple "charge this device for several hours before attempting to setup and use" in the box would have solved all my issues. ... If it was just off and completely dead I would have figured it out quickly, but it actually displayed lights and gave the appearance that something was working at first and started to pair with the app for a bit. ... It wouldn't play the sound to identify the speaker so I had to manually enter the number as an alternative."

"can’t seem to get them to connect to my system. Keeps telling me they need to update and I get an error. I’ve been on the phone with support twice now doing all kinds of things to try and fix them. Apparently they are sending an email with info to return them within the next two business days."

"Hubba tent has a single top tube, this design is made to be lightweight but it cannot withstand wind."

"These taller tents don't do well in high winds. ... They're like giant sails, and the poles tend to bend."

"My tents are UL backpacking (Durston XDome and BA Copper). The BA wets out too easily ... It’s the floor that starts to wet out- it doesn’t become completely wet, but if there’s a hard rain, patches of the floor will start to darken and become damp bc water is underneath. ... Except I lifted the floor of the tent up to see what was going on and saw water had gathered, not dew."

"I was disappointed with our Copper Spur. The floor got tons of tiny holes in it after one use, on clear, soft ground. ... We used the footprint, so I have no idea what caused it."

"Yes the bottom is super thin. ... I always use a Gossamer Gear plastic tarp under the copper spur bottom."

"We decided to get a 3p tent because our two wide pads were smacking together in the copper spur 2."

"We actually bought the BA copper spur HVUL3 at first and returned after our first trip it as it was too big for us as a backpacking tent."

"2p is way too small for two people unless you like sleeping on top of each other or maybe you’re both 5’ and 100lbs?"

I agree. I have that tent. It's solid, roomy, and easy to set up. Beautifully designed. But do use a footprint.

Copper Spur HV UL3 Long is 8foot. Marmot's Limelight is 88". You might have to lay diagonally in shorter tents.

We have a HV UL 3 Long, which we got so our dogs can sleep at our feet. So far, we really love it, and despite being bigger than the tent it replaced (2015 Half Dome 2+), it is actually lighter. As for durability, we've managed to tear the stuff sack halfway open, in the first year of use. No offer of warranty replacement when I contacted BA. Outside of that, it is intuitive, roomy, light, and has decent storage.

I've been really happy with my Big Agnes double-wall tent. It's over 20 years old now and still kicking. The BD-pyramid type thing, or just a snow-cave are my favorite options for ski tours though.

r/UltralightNew 3-person tent - BA Copper Spur, Tiger Wall vs Nemo Hornet, Dragonfly

Hi all, Looking to get a new 3P tent for my partner and I! We currently have an older version of the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL 3 (pre-Hyber Bead). It's a great tent that has held up to our use for a solid 7+ years, but we're looking to upgrade / renew it since the waterproofness seems to be fading a bit. We're considering just replacing it with the new Copper Spur UL 3, but wanting to poll the group to see if other options are worth considering – especially the Tiger Wall, Nemo Hornet, or Dragonfly. **Our use case:** \- backpacking around PNW mostly \- Our preference is for a 3 person for use with our dog, a friend for those rare occasions, or a future child. \- semi-freestanding or freestanding (we have an X-Mid for when weight really matters, but lately my partner hates the fiddle factor of trekking pole tents, and I don't mind splitting the weight of a larger tent when I camp with her). \- we will also use the tent for some car camping / front country campgrounds... so take that FWIW. That said our Copper Spur has been totally adequate for this; we don't need more space than that. \- I'm 6 foot if that is an issue in these smaller tents \- Want to keep weight around 1800g total (Copper Spur is the heaviest we want to go) \- Durability is a big concern for us. The Copper Spur has held up well, being a bit careful, with no major issues. I've anecdotally heard the Nemo stuff holds up better than the Big Agnes stuff, but we want this tent to last a while or be able to be serviced / repaired should issues come up. \- storm worthiness - nothing crazy, just 3 season conditions, but it gets WET here in the spring/fall. Performance in wind would also be a benefit, but we do have a dedicated 4-season tent for winter stuff. \- warranty support (in Canada, if possible) - while I haven't had issues, I've heard Big Agnes' warranty is suffering a bit vs Nemo's, which I've heard is excellent. \- Hyperbead vs. Osmo, any differences here? \- Is the portion of the body on the Nemo Hornet an issue in rain/wind?

thanks! Yea we figured it's probably the Copper Spur. That said given we haven't had durability issues with it, wondering if we could get away with one of the lighter models like the Tiger Wall or Hornet and use it with a footprint when we're car camping. Car camping comfort isn't a big need – the space of a 3 person is more than comfortable enough and fits our exped megamat just fine (we don't need one of those mega walmart palaces!).

I'm 1.90 and have been in both of these. Pretty similar really: can fit but need to be careful. Which is better than most trekking tents to be fair. When my hubba hubba died (after many years!), I shelled out for a long version of the Big Agnes copper spur. Much more comfortable but not great in strong winds supposedly

Also agree, but take it up a notch to the ul3 Hotel so you have the "garage" to keep the gear in and maximize the space inside. I backpack with this tent and if it quit tomorrow I would buy another with the hotel, I love it and while a luxury for one (although I'm a big guy) it is still pretty perfect for two

r/UltralightIs Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL 2 still a good buy in 2025 for $509 CAD?

Seconding that the Copper Spur is an awesome tent. I love how easy it is to set up and how it is essentially bomb proof. I use a 3 person version for trips with my wife and big dog. For solo trips, I think trying out one of the lighter trekking pole tents (you can use a substitute pole that is NOT a trekking pole too) is the way to go. There are tons of options nowadays so you can pretty much get whatever thing you want between a tarp and a full on tent.

I’m a big fan of the Big Agnes Copper Spur HVUL3 for your use case. Super durable, essentially bomb proof, and plenty roomy for two and a dog.

You won’t end up with a tent that checks all those boxes better than the Copper Spur. There are lighter and smaller tents, by a good bit. But durable, pet friendly, good for humid climates, storm worthy, comfortable enough for car camping, and still fairly light- just go with the newer model.

Boy howdy. I've wrestled with this nuisance a lot the past few years with two 50-80 pound dawgs with me. Given ur tent size, my Big Agnes Copper Spur 3 ULV (fully-staked taut fly) in the High Sierra would be comparable and has tolerated and removed a lot of condensation. My three other 3P-6P high-end tents do very well if just mindful to give all the vents full exposure too. In a pinch, pack some calcium chloride in a crappy sock, place in an open-ended ziploc, and pull that juice out of your tent.
