Might I suggest the Cabela’s Alaskan Guide Model Geodesic 4-Person Tent with full vestibule and extra storage or cooking space out front. Right now on Sale for $299. $100 savings. Another option until you find exactly what you want is to Rent a tent from REI or other places that have rentals. This would allow you to explore your options and try out different types of tents. Just so you know if you look how a tent manufacturer shows their tents it’s based on 4 people with no room for gear unless store outside or in small doorway. I’ve been selling tents for all types of campers for 35+ years. Most people don’t know that tents are basically just sleeping areas and not storage. So typically if you plan on having 4 people 5’ or taller camping you should be looking at a 5-6 person tent. 4 people sleeping and room for 4 Packs or anything else that is needed. You can understand this better by taking everyone to a Store set up a tent with sleeping pads and sleeping bags. Lay down look how much space is available around you. This will give you a better understanding of what you really need. My rule of thumb I’ve always said to customers is if you have bags, backpacks or other items. Take one person out of the tent . So a 4 person tent will fit 3 adults or youth over 5’ and all gear. Cool thing is Cabela’s Alaskan 4 Season tent does come in a 6 person tent. Which would allow you more space for backpacks and gear plus 4 people sleeping. Nice thing is you can separate the weight into 4 people so it’s more evenly weight distribution. We talking car camping then? The Cabela’s Guide tents are very durable.

The Alaskan Guide model. They are pretty much bomb proof. Definitely waterproof. Geodesic dome is very strong. Big and heavy. Before the Bass Pro merger they used to offer this model with aluminum poles and it was a popular hunting tent in Alaska for bad weather areas. These are nice. Since they are 4 season there is less ventilation and they are more difficult to set up than a 3 season dome.

r/CampingGearGearlabs top 19 tents are all 200$+. One is even over a thousand. Are those of ua getting the 70$ amazon special really buying junk?!

Mine finally gave up after a decade, or I would do the same. We car camp, so weight isn’t a worry and the Cabela’s Outfitter geodesic tents have been rock solid. We had to get a bigger one as our family grew, but the little one works great for the teenagers now and I love being able to actually stand up in the big one.

I don’t really need the duty cycle of the Outfitter tents either, but after a week or so hunting in the rain of the coastal Cascades it’s really, really, nice to come home to a 100% dry tent. It also absolutely ensures that my Wife will never get the opportunity to bitch about a leaky tent. In some situations, overkill is worth the price :)

I have both the four and eight person versions of this tent. I’ve been camping in the PNW for decades and they’ve taken everything Nature has thrown at them.

r/CampingGearIf weight is no longer a constraint, what would you choose for a freestanding tent?

I like my cabelas Alaskan guide geodesic tent. I don’t remember which size it is, but it comfortably fits 4 people and can stand up to pretty high winds with the guy wires out

The Cabelas Alaska Guide tents are pretty bombproof for a nylon tent. We have an older version that was one step down from the Alaska Guide series. The main difference between ours is that it has fiberglass poles and is a tan color instead of green. The one linked is basically the same. Full rain fly, and the dome is nice and tall. Fits our family of 5 and a dog perfectly. It is too big for tent sites with elevated pads, but most tents over 10x10 or 12x12 are. The vestibule is big enough for a medium tote and shoes.

I have this tent and it’s a beast. It’s by far the most sturdy tent I’ve ever had.
