I second the Featherstone UL Granite 2 person. Great tent with a lot of features that compare with more expensive iterations of the design. Video comparing it to others below. https://youtu.be/stSFZ4ugxTs?si=kBghHCtwW0pkBdQs

Featherstone tent, REI sleeping bag from their used gear section. Edit: took a WELL used featherstone granite 2p tent on the Great Divide Bikepacking route. 69 consecutive nights of use in all types of weather. Rain, snow, high winds. It was Bombproof. It still had tons of life left at the end. Picked up a used REI magma sleeping bag from their used gear section and used it for 60 consecutive nights of bike touring in South America. I still have it and it still works great.
I have the featherstone granite 2 person tent and I love it it’s not crazy light weight it’s 5 pounds with all the stakes and footprint but they also have a Trecking pole tent that looks good I would recommend you look at there stuff
Yeah, That MSR is pretty close (Identical?) to the profile that my tent has (Featherstone Granet) and unless the rain is being blown in sideways from exactly the wrong direction, everything inside stays dry when I open it.
I just used mine this weekend on the AT for my daughter's first section hike (8yo, and she absolutely crushed it). Worked great! Good luck!
Hey! Just chiming in as someone who’s done quite a few budget-friendly trips (including the Rockies!). You're totally right to look into **Featherstone** — solid brand for the price, especially their **Backpack UL 2P**. It's light, packs small, and holds up well in 3-season conditions. For sleeping bags, here are a couple of budget options that won’t leave you freezing at night: * **REI Trailbreak 20** – around $100, synthetic fill, decent warmth-to-weight ratio for beginners. * **Hyke & Byke Eolus 30°F** (down) – if you can stretch a bit more, this one’s warm, packable, and lighter than synthetic. Also check out **Naturehike tents** – their Cloud Up 2 is budget ultralight gold if you’re okay with slightly less durability. Tip: Don’t forget a good sleeping pad — something like the **Klymit Static V** helps way more than you’d think for warmth and comfort. You’re doing great researching this now — the Rockies can be unpredictable even in spring, so solid gear will pay off. Let me know if you want recs for budget stoves or other essentials!
The Granite 2p is awesome. Unfortunately also somewhat hard to get since it’s popular and sells out quick.
I went for the Granite as well. Seems like a great value for what you get, but this weekend will be the first time I get to see how it holds up in the rain.
$69.99 Bisinna 2 $149.99 Lanshan 1-person $169.99 Lanshan 2-person $169.00 Naturehike Cloud-Up 2-person $129.00 Featherstone UL Obsidian 1-person $139.99 Featherstone UL Granite 2-person $179.99 Featherstone Backbone 1-person $199.99 Featherstone Backbone 2-person Of these, I would probably choose the Featherstone UL Granite 2P because: Freestanding Double-walled 20D silnylon has high strength-to-weight ratio Spacious 2 side entries 2 vestibules 2 vents on the rainfly Popular and receives good reviews However, the Granite 2P is heavy at 4.2 lbs. Some of the other tents on this list are lighter. For example, the Featherstone Backbone 1P only weighs 1.9 lbs.
Only thing similar I personally own is a Featherstone 2p granite Looks like it's around $130 on Amazon. I bought mine years ago and use it as my car camping tent as it's over 4 lbs, but it's a decent budget tent For backpacking I use Durston x-mid 1 or x-dome 1+
At your budget, for a 2 person tent I would look at the Featherstone Granite (US based support), the mongar 2/mongar 2 UL or the Paria Zion 2. All are pretty much the same tents and are clones of the MSR hubba hubba more or less. If you wanted to up your budget another $100-$120 I'd get an XMid
A backpack of course along with a sleeping pad (insulated if going in cold), sleeping bag/quilt, tent. These are your big 4. A budget setup would be something like: Tent - Lanshan 2 or one of the Naturehike tents or featherstone granite - around $150 If you have the money I would get a Durston Xmid, it's pretty bomb proof and is around $330, amazing tent Sleeping bag - Kelty cosmic down - on sale for $135, Paria thermodown - on sale for $150 Sleeping pad - Paria recharge insulated - $100 or REI Helix backpack - Granite Gear crown 2 used to be found under $100 (I have one and paid $70 on sale), maybe the Decathlon MT100 or one of the REI coop bags. I'm not 100% sure what is considered the best budget one these days After the big guys above you will need: Cooking system - I use the Firemaple 600ml pot ($20) and a cheap amazon stove that fits the pot's cutouts but they sell their own for like $20 I think it's called the Greenpeak Water filter - I have a sawyer mini but if I got one again I'd get a platypus quickdraw on sale now for $30
