I’ve never found vents that work in rain… In my experience, vents only work when it’s cold and dry and I’m using the fly for wind protection. In that case, the vents allow some of the warm, moist air to escape instead of condensing on the inside of the fly and forming ice crystals. I still get some ice formation, just… less. When it’s raining hard, the RH is simply too high for vents to allow enough air to exchange. Instead, I tend to look for a tent design that allows me to keep the fly as open as possible during rain. For instance, if there are generous vestibules on opposing sides, I can keep the doors partially open to allow a cross-breeze. That’s the only way. Right now, I’m using three tents that I think are quite good: The Two by Gossamer Gear, Unbound 2 by HMG, and, Ultamid 4 by HMG. Those tents can be pitched or configured to allow a lot of airflow when it’s lightly raining or closed all the way down for maximum protection when it’s wild. I’ve seen some intimidating videos out of Scotland, though. Depending on where and when you’re going, you may want a freestanding four-season tent that’s more capable in heavy wind. Sounds like a fun trip! Have fun. Good luck.
We use a Gossamer Gear The Two! It has doors on both sides. We each have our own Nemo Tensors so if one person is rolling over it's not affecting the other. Also, separate mummy bags. I've included a link to my pack that also has the links to all the sleeping gear! [https://fethr.io/user/hi-c?pack=Overnight+Backpack](https://fethr.io/user/hi-c?pack=Overnight+Backpack)
I'd take a GG The Two before the tent you listed. of course something made of DCF will be your lightest option if you have 500-700 to spend
Have used the Xmid 2p and Gossomer Gears "the two". Both solid trekking pole tents which are easy to set up after a trial run. I'll be running "the two" on my upcoming solo trip. Haven't used zpacks, but im sure its comparable. Trekking pole tents are a great way to save weight.
Solid has the sturdier fly, in material and with some of reinforcements (at least in earlier versions) and still has the YKK5 zip (versus the YKK3) which I personally prefer. X-Mid is A LOT better in the wind than the GG.
Take The Two if you don’t need to camp in strong winds or in snow. It’s so much lighter. In snowy and a bit more windy conditions X-Mid solid would make sense. It’s still not for winter (snow) storms, though
Yes, agree. As said, if winter camping isn’t a real requirement I’d prefer the Two.
Gossamer The Two is so close to meeting your request, and is on sale in a couple days at half off. Supposedly you can fit two tapered 25" pads in it. But it's 42" at the feet. I like my The One. Its palacious, light, and roomy, but a bit of a large footprint, similar to the xmid.
It still comes out to $200+ and about \~16 oz/450g (I'm being lazy and using Borah Gear as a baseline) for a 7x9 silpoly tarp with the bivy. The weight savings aren't negligible, especially if you prefer a more open setup over an enclosed shelter, but the cost is close, which is my main point. The classic Tarptent ProTrail is $240 and serves as my baseline for this tent style. Heck, the Gossamer Gear The One is $250 and 18 oz / 500 g. I can't personally speak to The One, but I've found the very similar The Two to be an excellent shelter for my partner and me. So not that different in terms of price and weight, either. Naturally, DCF changes this equation in both price and weight, but that's a different discussion. And don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved my flat tarp on the PCT, and I wish the silpoly bug bivy had been available at the time, since I mostly cowboy camped. It's something I could have easily mailed back at some point, and I'd have ended up with an even lighter shelter once I was past mosquito hell. For the right person, it's an excellent tool. But it's not the ideal setup for everyone. It also takes up a larger footprint, which can matter if you're inclined to camp with others in popular or tighter spots.
I own a Gossamer Gear The Two and it's awesome in spring and summer but when it gets wetter and colder condensation does become an issue and I find myself going for a double walled tent (nature hike cloud river 2). However when the weather allows it I absolutely love The Two. So I'm my opinion it all comes down to hope you plan to use your tent
Gossamer gear 2. 1.5 pounds lighter and they sell a pole set optional. Look for a sale.
