With experience with a Duplex, Plex Solo and The Two, I'd probably pick The One if bulk was a big factor. It's not as sturdy in high winds as a non-stretchy DCF tent, but I've slept through some heavy gusts in my GG tent. A good pitch goes a long way. The sag is there, and some hikers I met find it bothersome while it's only a minor nuicanse for me. I'd say get the GG, try it out in a wet environment and see if you manage. If not, resell. You won't lose too much money. One inconvenience the Pivot Solo shares with the other Zpacks 1p tents is the low beak attachment. Getting in and out can be pretty inconvenient. But I guess that's where lower weight impacts comfort. The arched zippers in the Zpacks tents is a nuisance under high bug pressure. GG and Durston designs are much better there as theirs have the mesh fall into place even when the zipper is open, so you don't invite an army of mosquitos into your tent each time you get in or out. Think Yosemite right after snow melt. I'm going to take my The Two on the JMT this summer, and I've hiked in the Sierras before so I know what to expect.
Just another vote for the "don't worry" category. Went through the Sierra with a Duplex and never had an issue, so I'm going to jump on the JMT this year with a trekking pole tent again (GG The Two).
We use a Gossamer Gear The Two! It has doors on both sides. We each have our own Nemo Tensors so if one person is rolling over it's not affecting the other. Also, separate mummy bags. I've included a link to my pack that also has the links to all the sleeping gear! [https://fethr.io/user/hi-c?pack=Overnight+Backpack](https://fethr.io/user/hi-c?pack=Overnight+Backpack)
I'd take a GG The Two before the tent you listed. of course something made of DCF will be your lightest option if you have 500-700 to spend
Have used the Xmid 2p and Gossomer Gears "the two". Both solid trekking pole tents which are easy to set up after a trial run. I'll be running "the two" on my upcoming solo trip. Haven't used zpacks, but im sure its comparable. Trekking pole tents are a great way to save weight.
Solid has the sturdier fly, in material and with some of reinforcements (at least in earlier versions) and still has the YKK5 zip (versus the YKK3) which I personally prefer. X-Mid is A LOT better in the wind than the GG.
Take The Two if you don’t need to camp in strong winds or in snow. It’s so much lighter. In snowy and a bit more windy conditions X-Mid solid would make sense. It’s still not for winter (snow) storms, though
Yes, agree. As said, if winter camping isn’t a real requirement I’d prefer the Two.
So I’m gonna a go ahead and say that list is ridiculous 😂 only two tents under 2lb. And any I clicked to check price were pushing $400. So you’re looking at the wrong list. Very surprised no one has mentioned Gossamer Gear yet? Their two man “The Two” weighs 26oz and costs $320 new (or watch gearswaps and get one for ~$225 regularly). “The One” is 18oz and $250 new (<$200 used) if you want to go smaller and lighter. Both use trekking poles and are very easy to setup. Stake your corners, insert poles, stake your peaks. And watch r/GearTrade r/ULgeartrade and backpackinglight.com's gearswap, or post a Want To Buy (WTB) in any of those
Haven’t used the hornet so I couldn’t speak on that, but I definitely recommend the price point lol… the Only other tent I’ve used for backpacking is the gossamer gear the two. But man, without the footprint, it packs down pretty damn small, just as small as my gossamer (obviously without the poles in the bag). I just put the poles in my water bottle pocket. It may not be as light as you’re wanting, but personally I think it’s the best deal on the market rn for budget tents.
It still comes out to $200+ and about \~16 oz/450g (I'm being lazy and using Borah Gear as a baseline) for a 7x9 silpoly tarp with the bivy. The weight savings aren't negligible, especially if you prefer a more open setup over an enclosed shelter, but the cost is close, which is my main point. The classic Tarptent ProTrail is $240 and serves as my baseline for this tent style. Heck, the Gossamer Gear The One is $250 and 18 oz / 500 g. I can't personally speak to The One, but I've found the very similar The Two to be an excellent shelter for my partner and me. So not that different in terms of price and weight, either. Naturally, DCF changes this equation in both price and weight, but that's a different discussion. And don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved my flat tarp on the PCT, and I wish the silpoly bug bivy had been available at the time, since I mostly cowboy camped. It's something I could have easily mailed back at some point, and I'd have ended up with an even lighter shelter once I was past mosquito hell. For the right person, it's an excellent tool. But it's not the ideal setup for everyone. It also takes up a larger footprint, which can matter if you're inclined to camp with others in popular or tighter spots.
I own a Gossamer Gear The Two and it's awesome in spring and summer but when it gets wetter and colder condensation does become an issue and I find myself going for a double walled tent (nature hike cloud river 2). However when the weather allows it I absolutely love The Two. So I'm my opinion it all comes down to hope you plan to use your tent
