Marmot - Tungsten 1P

The tungstens are awesome. A little heavy and bulky for backpacking but you can totally make it work too. I have a 1p and 3p and they are my go to for car camping. I used to use them for backpacking until I got lighter stuff.

It’s a good tent! As others said, it’s not designed to be a very lightweight backpacking tent, so if your main desire for upgrading is weight savings you might want to sniff around some more. But quality-wise it should be a solid, long-lasting tent if you go for it. There is a UL version of the Tungsten that is lighter (like 2.5 lbs vs nearly 4) but of course shaving those pounds and ounces costs more!

It’s a heavy tent, but well made. If you don’t care about the weight or size as much, it’ll last a long time as long as you take care of it

I had the 1 person Tungsten and it’s a really solid tent. Rode out heavy thunderstorms with hail dry as a bone. Only drawback is the weight. I’m old (49) and have dough so I upgraded to Nemo Dragonfly 1p and it’s like half the weight. Gave my Tungsten to a friend’s son who is like 20 and has the energy to carry a heavier tent

In addition to the durston tents as already suggested (I have the x mid and while its very light because it’s a trekking pole tent, the fabric feels quite durable), I want to suggest the marmot tungsten 1 person tent. Less than 4lbs, durable, comfortable, less than $300. It’s the first backpacking tent I bought and it’s still the one I reach for on shorter trips where I’m not worried about weight. It’s so easy to set up, stays stable in wind and rain, and fits it pretty small spots without feeling claustrophobic inside. Others have suggested big Agnes — while I love the big Agnes fly creek 1p I have I would not describe it as very durable. I do a lot more patching of holes on that tent than the other two I mentioned. Still a great tent and I’m not getting rid of it anytime soon, but I don’t think it’s what you are looking for.

I bought the same tent on Sunnysports about 4 years ago and I love it. I now use a lighter 2P tent for backpacking, but the Marmot Tungsten 1P is solid for the price.

I own Kelty, North Face and Marmot backpacking tents, and can attest to their durability, ease of use and agreeable weight. I've used them both in the backcountry as well as when going car camping.

Must haves (I’ve passed over and returned tents for these) Poles that clip instead of slide into sleeves. Makes setup/takedown super fast and easy.  High Quality zippers/fabric/hardware Full rain fly with vestibule for shoes. Double doors.  Good ventilation and plenty of mesh. If weight wasn’t such an issue it’d be fine, but for backpacking specifically, I’d definitely go lighter. Also, that extra width in the Tungsten does make sharing a tent way more comfortable, especially if you have wider pads.

Marmot Tungsten, Naturehike Mongar 2p, Big Agnes Copper Spur, Durston X-Dome... Lots of great options out there. Get a tent with a mesh body, not a solid body, for summer. The Sundomes is a good tent but gets hot and doesn't air out as well as a higher grade shelter since it has mostly solid walls.
