Read through the comments on the sub about grind. Grind is important. There are differing opinions about whether you should stir the grounds during the bloom stage to wet them. I do stir the grounds and it made a huge difference. The coffee my machine makes is just as rich as a French press or pour over. It’s so smooth, too. No bitterness, even if I drink the leftovers iced the next day. Hopefully, you can tweak the brew a little and have a better experience. I have a KB, not a KGBV, but the materials (on my machine) are high quality, especially compared to the average newer drip machines. I’m sad to hear your experience is different.

Aeropress is great for single cup. For caraffe MoccaMaster KB - you can control the flow value in the dripper to do a proper bloom with the on/off switch. The temp is preset by manufacturer. But the main thing is any machine is cleaning and maintenance. Get a descaler and cleaner, systemically do that every 2-3 months or 60 tanks of water.

My moccamaster is literally over 30 years old and works like a charm. And if something breaks spare parts are easy to buy and actually still fit. Everything should be made like this.

Granted we have what we call "soft" water but i think we descaled our old moccamaster once in like...12 years. Gave it away because we upgraded to a more expensive moccamaster, so it was still going strong then.

I find it hard to disagree. I bought one second hand for £80 and for that price it's justifiable for the aesthetic (orange!) but it's hardly the last word in coffee perfection. Automatic coffee makers are basically the lowest rung, so it's never going to set the world alight against basically any other method. I'm into buy for life and I love retro tech though, so it's staying and I love it.

Scandinavians are some of the top coffee drinkers in the world, and we swear by this machine. You'll find it in every home, unless they have a nespresso. My parents have had theirs for 40 years or so. Mine is 15 years old The standard measurement is 6 coffee measuring spoons (60 gram) to 1L of water

It's not 50$. The one OP has is about $250. It doesn't matter what it looks like on the outside; it's an engineering marvel. The design has stayed the same since the 70s. I'm glad it doesn't have unnecessarily heavy materials because it's heavy enough as it is. Scandinavians are cultish about this coffee machine because it's just that good. We all have one.

There are many different models and the one you have is the one that has a specific temperature setting for the plate. All moccamasters as far as I know have two heating elements under the plate: one for brewing, and one for just keeping it hot. I think the setting is for those who want scalding hot coffee but I don't know.. This one has a setting for brewing a half or a whole pot. So you can pour 1L into it, but coffee for only half a pot and set it to the half pot setting and it will only use half the water

Your definition of full pot vs the mocca masters definition of a full pot probably differs! A full pot is 1.25 liters, so half a pot is 6.25 dl. Moccamaster recommends around 34g of coffee per half pot. I personally only brew 0.5L at a time and use about 30-35 gr

Nope! Those are different machines with different settings. There are many moccamasters models. This setting is so you can fill it with 1L or more of water but coffee only for half a pot. Flipping the switch results in it only using enough water for half a pot of coffee.

Set a keyword alert on [slickdeals](https://slickdeals.net/search?q=Technivorm&searcharea=deals&searchin=first&isUserSearch=1&sort=relevance&searchtype=normal&filters%5Bforum%5D%5B%5D=0&filters%5Brating%5D%5B%5D=all&filters%5Bdate%5D%5B%5D=1095) is how I got a deal on mine. Paid $220 for the 40oz/10 cup KGBT model in Nov 2023, which I think was like $100 off new price. I've seen them drop between $180-200 in the last 4-6 months. I don't think you get a better warranty anywhere but I guess if you Amazon you can probably send it back in 30 days if you don't like it .

Not really a splurge as some in this thread suggest because the darn things are built to last just about forever if descaled from time to time; for what it's worth, the Wirecutter folks at the NY Times actually rated other makers higher for the frills they offered but admitted to making their office coffee with the MM because they loved the flavour. My little bro bought an OXO when he couldn't get a replacement carafe for his 8-cup MM but went back to the MM as soon as the carafes were restocked. If I had to buy a new one, I'd probably go with the thermal carafe model, as the hot plate on my old MM tends to stew the coffee before I get my morning daily requirement down, but that's my only complaint. And my maker is an older one, for all I know newer models may have more lower temp hot plates.

I have had both. Thermal is indeed better because the heat from the other one, with the glass carafe and the heat plate under it is supposedly bad for the coffee. But i really like the glass carafe looks though
