I managed to get an ode gen 2 on sale for about 230 from here if you are UK based - [https://healf.com/products/fellow-ode-brew-grinder-gen-2-matte-black?variant=44637378576623](https://healf.com/products/fellow-ode-brew-grinder-gen-2-matte-black?variant=44637378576623) There's some first order discounts and such to add on. I was flipflopping between the opus and the Ode 2, then I thought - I'm going to have this for 5+ years, and use it 2/3 times a day. It's worth spending the extra £60 or dollars on. The thing that flipped it was, I thought, if i bought the Opus, every time i used it, I'd wish it was the Ode. And, I don't have any regrets, the Ode is a great grinder, looks fantastic and was a big upgrade from the Sage I was using.
Given your need for grinding larger doses, I would go with an Ode Gen 2 for pourover.
It appears to me that the [DF54 + brew burrs would cost $278](https://miicoffee.shop/products/miicoffee-df54-single-dose-coffee-grinder?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=18519892019&gbraid=0AAAAAD8Pi-9VSBAWuZeDltVklpRTdLCw_&gclid=CjwKCAiAuIDJBhBoEiwAxhgyFsG_4rrUqB3UmCfk4saK3vTK8GGOBRBaIiuwcw9GR2yRB-lEKb4SgRoCI1YQAvD_BwE) while the [Ode Gen 2 is $319.95 for Black Friday](http://amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0BLRMCM9Y/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_plhdr=t&aaxitk=6d5c2cd129cfd9988c359614670f2505&hsa_cr_id=0&qid=1763741962&sr=1-2-9e67e56a-6f64-441f-a281-df67fc737124&ref_=sbx_s_sparkle_sbtcd_asin_1_title&pd_rd_w=0HAUh&content-id=amzn1.sym.9f2b2b9e-47e9-4764-a4dc-2be2f6fca36d%3Aamzn1.sym.9f2b2b9e-47e9-4764-a4dc-2be2f6fca36d&pf_rd_p=9f2b2b9e-47e9-4764-a4dc-2be2f6fca36d&pf_rd_r=WD1NQZM0YGHBX0CYDQPD&pd_rd_wg=WeuMP&pd_rd_r=8040fe77-db06-4811-8ef2-e39986f26ab0), assuming you are in the US. That's still a $40 difference. What are you looking for in your brews, and what coffees do you prefer?
Well, the DF54 + brew burrs would have that high clarity profile you want. The Ode Gen 2 provides a more blended flavor profile that is quite forgiving, while still offering good clarity.
As someone who graduated from an Encore to the Fellow Ode 2 I suggest saving until you can afford the Ode 2. While the Encore is a very solid grinder, the fines produced can be tricky to deal with in a pour over. I cannot imagine the Oxo will be on par with the Encore in terms of fines and grind uniformity. So if you’re talking $300 already, spend $400 on the Ode 2 which makes significantly better cups than the Encore. The Ode 2 has much higher clarity than the Encore. But I should also specify that I enjoy more clarity and brightness, I drink light to very light roast coffee. If you are into medium to dark roasts and like a thicker, chocolate like cup then the Encore will work a treat.
I have the Ode 2 and I might lose .1 of a gram at the most. It’s not a big deal.
I have the Pietro with the brew burrs. I also have the Ode 2 with stock burrs. I like having both options for pour overs. I drink mostly light and ultra light roasts and enjoy various processes. I find that when the Pietro’s clarity isn’t getting the most out of a specific bean, the ode 2 is different enough to get a sweeter cup.
Another suggestion is the Fellow Ode with the Gen 2 burrs. The Gen 2 burrs are more medium bodied vs the the ZP6, Pietro, and SSP MP burrs. Can't use it for espressos though I personally like my pourovers to be light bodied and my espressos to be medium bodied. I think its because I started out like that.
best price to performance is probably the Kingrinder K6 handgrinder at $100. Available on Amazon. best price to performance electric grinder is the Fellow Ode Gen2 for $350. Occasionally goes on sale for 15% to 20% off. This grinder will not do espresso. K-ultra and ZP6 are also outstanding grinders. I think I would prefer the Ode to the DF64V if purely for pourovers.
I’m very happy with my 2nd gen Ode. I steered clear of the opus once I saw how much of it was made of plastic and how light it felt.
Honestly none of these are bad options. It's just going to come down to what you prefer. The K6 may give you the most options as it's supposed to be great for filter and also espresso capable, I haven't used it but I would wager that it's probably a better espresso grinder than the Encore. However if you're not interested at all in espresso then the Fellow Ode 2 is probably the best option here for filter coffee. It has flat burrs instead of the conical burrs you usually get in hand grinders and common electric grinders - and many people prefer flat burrs for filter coffee because they tend to produce a more uniform grind size, which can lead to a cleaner tasting cup with more clarity. The downside to the Ode 2 is it's obviously not as portable as the K6, it's more expensive and it's not designed for espresso at all so if you ever want to try making espresso you'll need a whole new second grinder. Obviously that's not an issue if you don't intend to use for espresso.
My recommendation is to save up another $150 and buy a fellow owed Gen 2. And I would avoid that website if you want a quality product in great shape. But that's just me. I feel like maybe some deferred gratification is in order. You'll be glad in the long run. You've saved up $200. Why not save up 200 more and get a quality product that will be exponentially better than what you can get at your $200 price point and will last you for decades .It's worth it to wait and get a superior product. IMO
Me too. I prefer my ZP6 to the Ode 2 for all brews
Start with the Encore. It's more than good enough for batch filter coffee. I used an Ode 2 for years and I can't say I was ever too impressed with it.
Yeah, it was a step up ik terms of clarity from the Encore, but it still falls into the jack of all trades, master of none category once you want to go further. I decided to go elsewhere instead of upgrading the burr set.
That's fair. From what I remember about briefly using a DF54, it was a nice grinder but the Ode 2 felt better to use. I also got my Ode 2 for $280 which probably made it seem like a much better value.
