How much do you weigh? I loved a mosquito / uscooter gt sport for living near downtown. Make sure you get a high ip rating for winter and rinse all salt off immediately. Now I have a Klima and it is awesome for Chicago but expensive and not for beginners. I can get from south loop to Lincoln Park in 15 minutes

I can't answer about the dorms, but I can answer about the scooter. **Short answer:** You can't bring them inside most buildings. Just lock it to a bike rack, it's fine. The exact one you should get depends on your needs. I had a Gotrax, but I now have an etwow/uscooter GT Sport. I have heard good things about the Segway and NIU products. Obviously, be safe and be a good scooter driver. Stop at intersections, don't run into people, be aware of your surroundings. Avoid riding on pedestrian pathways on campus. I used to cut between buildings, but it's way better to just stay on the streets. **Long answer:** There are a ton of benefits to having a good PEV. Scooters are the best blend of safety, performance, and price for almost everyone. They can almost replace a car, depending on your lifestyle. If you can afford one and your lifestyle is compatible, it will save you *massive* amounts of time and money. It's most useful if you live within a few miles from campus, with a decent amount of bike lane on your route. If this is your setup, your scooter will get you to class faster than any other method. No waiting on the bus, no paying for a parking pass, no long walk from the car to the classroom, no sitting in traffic. You can basically be wherever on campus you want, whenever you want. Sometimes I can start at Brookshire Bros and be walking into Zachry in less than 10 minutes. I used to have a low-end Gotrax. It got the job done, but it was slow, and it ended up breaking on me a few times. Replacement parts were not readily available, and eventually it was no longer financially sensible to keep fixing it. So when I set out to buy another scooter, I had a few qualities in mind. * Build quality: Self-explanatory. * Availability of replacement parts: Something will break eventually. It's hard to trust these brands, but it's nice to find one that seems to offer parts that'll save your scooter. * Speed and power: This is sort of a wiener-measuring contest. That said, I paid a lot of money for a scooter that outpaces almost every PV on campus, without getting into the uber pricey enthusiast bracket. That level of speed actually makes a difference in how fast I get to class. * Size/appearance: Not extremely ugly, but mostly something small enough to easily carry and stow in a car trunk if need be. * Value: Features and corresponding prices are constantly changing with scooters. If you break the thousand dollar mark, you're usually getting into enthusiast territory. I spent a good bit on mine because I wanted a fast scooter, and I had internship money. Spend enough to get good build quality and you'll get your money's worth. Some other factors you might consider are: safety/wheel size, suspension, pneumatic vs airless tires, weight, water resistance, "smart" features. If you were to ask for a quick review of my etwow GT sport, I'd say this: It's built well, and it's going strong with over 600 miles on it. My favorite thing is how fast it goes, as childish as that is. The ride comfort is decent. The range is a bit low but plenty for me. The tires are small and airless, so they're low maintenance, but it's really easy to slip on the slightest patch of water. The small size makes it easy to carry if need be, and also keeps it from crowding up an elevator when I'm sharing it with others. The value would have made more sense if I bought it as a freshman and used it all four years. Even at its high price, it would have paid for itself in time savings and parking passes. This was really long for no reason. Hopefully it helps you and others while shopping.

I got the GT Sport because of the brake and it's worth it to me, especially because I'm used to it from riding bikes. It looks like the GT SL also has the brake depending on which year it was made. From this sub I was expecting the electrical brake to be useless so I'm pleasantly surprised at how effective it is at below 10mph. It's a sudden stop but the momentum carrying your body continues so it feels like a jolt. In comparison, the hand/drum brake lets you control the stoppage, for example you can choose to slow instead of stopping. I have never used the rear/fender brake. The Mosquito was sold out when I was shopping and people are saying they filed for bankruptcy so...
