Make sure it's the PodMic USB as opposed to the XLR-only version. The latter needs an audio interface, while the former is USB as well as XLR, so can plug straight into your Mac to start with. Disclaimer: I'm Head of Podcaster Support and Experience at Captivate.
\+1 to RODE Podmic USB - great on plenty of voices, good range, great sound.
I hace... Is a gret Mic... BETTER than so mouch others!
First... You are smart to invest in a good microphone. Sound quality trumps everything in your production (outside of the content, of course). Second, if you are trying to keep the budget low they you probably want a USB microphone because then you don't need any adapters or to plug into a mixing board. You can even plug in directly to a smartphone and record high-quality sound. For $99 you can get the older version of the Rode PodMic. \~$200 you can do the PodMic that has USB and XLR connectors. I personally use the Shure MV7+. It is excellent.
Yes, the MV7 is worth the extra money. To my ears, it's a much better sounding mic. Think about it this way, the PodMic is a $99 mic. You pay an extra $100 for them to make it USB. The MV7 is a $200 mic and you pay another $100 for them to add USB. The Shure mic is the mic I recommend to all of my clients because it just sounds good and I haven't heard a voice it doesn't work with. I've easily edited at least 20 different people using the MV7. The Podmic sounds fine in the video comparisons,. It will get the job done, but,a gain, to my ears, I prefer the sound of the MV7 by a wide margin.
I use the RØDE PodMic which is inexpensive, and has served me very well for the last few years, though it’s an XLR mic, which would require an audio interface/mixer in addition However, there’s also the RØDE PodMic USB, which is essentially the same microphone, but you can choose between USB and XLR connection, allowing you to switch to an XLR setup down the line if you so wished. It’s about £150, but I assume you’re talking US Dollars if you’re saying “bucks”, so it may be a little over budget. But a great mic to have if you can stretch your budget

I use the rode podmic usb with the iphone 16. I works great. A bit big and heavy for your use case.
Thanks! I’ll be getting the USB podmic !
My favorites are mics that do both. Samson Q2U, Rode Podmic USB *Moderator Required full disclosure: I am the head of Podcasting at Podpage and the founder of the School of Podcasting.*
I love, love, love, my Rode Podmic USB. I believe both mics come with software that enable you to shape the sound. The podmic USB is basically a single channel Rodecaster. I have a Shure SM7B, an EV RE300. I still use the Rode. Why? It's simple. I like my voice on that mic better (and that's all it boils down to) *Moderator Required full disclosure: I am the head of Podcasting at Podpage and the founder of the School of Podcasting.*
Rode Podmic USB is my favorite. The Rode Podmic USB has a noise gate built in (It's like having a single channel Rodecaster). *Moderator Required full disclosure: I am the head of Podcasting at Podpage and the founder of the School of Podcasting.*
Fourth. I do love the Rode Podmic USB, but if you're on a budget, it's hard to beat the Q2U *Moderator Required full disclosure: I am the head of Podcasting at Podpage and the founder of the School of Podcasting.*
The thing I like about the Rode Podmic USB is you are basically getting a single channel Rodecaster (as all the effects are in the software that comes with the mic, and you then save the settings into the mic). In the end, its the mic that you feel most comfortable (as all of these sound good). I have a Shure SM7B, and I still use the Rode Podmic USB. Why? Because I like the sound of my voice more on this mic than on the SM7B. *Moderator Required full disclosure: I am the head of Podcasting at Podpage and the founder of the School of Podcasting.*
If you're looking at a USB dynamic mic, you can't do much better than the Podmic USB.
