"The Instinct 3 is built tough (rugged, reliable) ... If you’ll drop it, bang it, leave it in harsh places, the Instinct’s durability becomes appealing"
"The Instinct/Fenix are better for hiking/backpacking since they’re tougher, with longer battery and more rugged features."
"I love the fact that I don't have to baby the watch at all"

"The sleep score and body battery is a game changer - It is insane how much this has helped me with better habits in just 6-weeks. ... I can see the difference in my sleep and body battery even if I have two alcoholic drinks at an event or with dinner, or if I have too much caffeine too late in the day. It is helping me understand the effects of these actions on other parts of my life more explicitly."
"the wearables are nothing more than a data collector for GPS & other monitors (HR strap, cadence, speed etc) - that they excel in. ... Garmin is best at actual training/event data for say a run/ride/tri etc when paired with a HR strap (cadence, speed and power sensors too)."
"The Garmin excels at all of that ... I wear a smart watch to gather my health stats; steps, floors, calories, heart rate etc, and also to get a good measure of my sleep."

"offers significantly better battery life ... insane battery life"
"I have had it on for 25d and it's still got 6% battery. That's what I'd call a watch!"
"Battery life, even when surfing every day for 2-3hrs a day is around 8 days, 16-18 days if I’m only using the watch as a watch. ... I’m charging once every 10-14 days atm, depending on activity levels."

"Garmin surprisingly messy ... Garmin was all over the place with noisy spikes. ... Garmin Instinct 3 really surprised me with how messy the HR data was. I am very negatively surprised with these results. ... I was really surprised with Garmin, and I am thinking it might have been not tight enough. I have the 50mm version and it is quite bulky, which probably causes a lot of movement, that probably interferes with the reading."
"Garmin has been failing at HR data for a while now, you need a chest stra for activities to get good data."
"HR sensor is well... unreliable? ... But today I was swimming 2000m with moderate pace, tempo was mostly very stable. And look what has been registered: [https://imgur.com/a/IpPNEfl](https://imgur.com/a/IpPNEfl) ... The only explanation for this, is that I didn't put the watch tight enough, and after some time of swimming it repositioned itself and started monitoring HR more correctly than for the first 15 mins."

"with the always on display on the battery life is horrible compared to any other instinct. ... with a fresh battery the 3 AMOLED will mabey last a week"
"For the record I have notifications and pulse-ox turned off."

"But those are a fair bit bulkier."
"50mm i3 is probably to bulky for swim"
"you’ll sacrifice some of the nicer interface and comfort of the 265."
The Garmin Instinct 3 falls closest to your budget and requirements, while maintaining a rugged look ([link to watch on Garmin website](https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/1316397/). I’ll let others chime in on the Tactix and Enduro - might as well consider the Fenix with a flexible budget.
I would go for either the Instinct 3 or Vivoactive 6. Both new watches are great, no issues. Vivoactive 6 is just in your budget range but isn't very 'rugged', which is the perfect desciption of the instinct 3 (which is a bit more pricey). You can go for the black and white screen of the Instinct E ($299), but the tech is a bit more dated, and if you are coming from an apple watch, im guessing you like the bright screens. Another option is the Epix 2 (refurbished) from amazon for $349 (what I would go for). This is their top of the line watch from a few years ago, but still very advanced with most of the new features. I think the "smaller" Garmins tend to feel even thicker because they need volume for the battery. I was going to suggest the 45mm Instinct 3 AMOLED but it may seem bulky to you too. It is much lighter than an Epix though.
I'm just sad that the 255 has become the last best value watch for general purpose. What would I go to next? If they would have made an Instinct 3 variant that was more like FR255, I'd see that as the logical successor. Sort of a budget Enduro. But instead they made the weird choice to make the Instinct 3 AMOLED similar to the FR265 and then the much more basic Instinct 3 Solar with its legacy limitations in the screen, processing, and memory. In my dream world, they'd be making maps available in a mid range budget watch, not bundling in more "premium" cosmetic and lifestyle crap so the basic price for mapping keeps going up.
venu 4 is most complete watch from named choice, and have flashlight. Need screen protector. and bezel is possible to scratch. don't buy venu 3 it's pretty big downgrade compared to v4. fr165 is perfectly fine starting watch for garmin. missing music, audio prompts and advance metrics like training status and training rediness compared to fr265s, but you need to wear watch 24/7 for this metrics to work correctly, and if you don't want to do it, fr165 is perfectly fine as workout watch. fr165 have 20mm strap, fr265s have 18mm strap that I don't like. Not sure how would you track kayakin, probably as cardio. Fr165 do have altmeter/barometar and track stairs but i think you can't directly access live data in widget, and on fr265s/i3 you can access widget directly. Probably because of software limitation. Another option in simular price/feature range as fr265s is instinct 3 amoled 45mm (if you can find it on discount) . More robust watch 10atm, flashlight, but doesn't have touch screen! and doesn't have music and audio prompts.
You should buy watch with gyroscope sensor . For example fr165 doesn't have it. Fr265(5 atm) or instinct 3 amoled (10atm) do have gyroscope.
If i remember correctly swim 2 was very similar watch to fr245? (gen 3 sensor, outdated in 2025) instinct 3 amoled doesn't have touch and music but have flashlight and stronger built quality. i3 solar have small memory. fr265 have lover atm rating (if you go regularly to swimming poll there is good chance to cloge barometar hole after a year of swimming) and don't have flashligh. As usual with garmin: pick you poision. Both watches have 5 buttons, and swim drill log mode, that's good. Both watches have gen 4 sensor that is ok for average hr, but pretty slow to adapt to intervals. Gen 5 sensor is little better. In newer watch models i think there is swim coach but didn't track that part. 50mm i3 is probably to bulky for swim, but 45 i3 or 46/42 fr 265 should be ok size.
Tbf, I sold my AWU2 for an Instinct 3 AMOLED and disliked it, sold it and got an AWU3. I miss the battery life and torch feature but it didn’t do enough with my phone to prefer it over an AWU. I have a Whoop 5.0 and the AWU3 now. Love it
The day apple makes an actual ruggedized smart watch that can last longer than 2 weeks on a single charge is the day I’ll switch. Until then my Instinct 3S is my little pride and joy.
Instinct 3 amo Getting 10 days with always on display, always connected to phone for weather.
As a gift, I think it is a good choice. Battery life is fair, you can go out for a 5 to 7 days of travel without charger or cable for Venu 3. In the daily life, I usually charge it once every week, but it can definitetly last even longer than one week. I have Venu3, Instinct 3 AMOLED and one Apple Watch, but my favorite is still Venu3.
I have the instinct 3 AMOLED and it’s been awesome. I received it on August 14th, starting wearing it the 15th and have yet to charge it since. Battery still shows 6 days left which is incredible
No I do the wrist gesture and have it on low light, which is plenty for me and still able to see just fine outside
Agreed with many of the folks here- don't buy the newest devices, and if you do, wait for a flash deal. I have the Instinct 2X, but I found the Instinct 3 Amoled for 200$ off...figured why not.
