This is where I am. Suunto 9 peak that won't die
As an owner of 9 Peak, Vertical 1 and Race 2, buy Garmin without hesitation.
I was an early Suunto adherent because their cloud was not Google like a Fitbit (Finnish cloud instead). Then they sold out to the Chinese (Liesheng) in 2022. Better hope that you never have a warranty issue. I had a problem with an old Suunto 5’s wrist band that kept breaking off the watch. Even though I sent pictures, I was required to mail the broken watch to Beijing before they would replace it. This took a month and I did it 2x before they finally sent me a Suunto 9 Peak. It performed flawlessly until just after the 2-year warranty expired recently, then suddenly the battery life went off a cliff from 10-day charges to 2-day recharging.
I upgraded 2 weeks ago from Suunto 9 to Race S. Late 40s male. Swimrunner. (Observer, Ambit 2, 9, Race S) I am really enjoying the upgrade, and the price made it feel like I stole something. As for your questions: 1. HR accuracy: This was a knock against the 9. The race s is a major improvement on accuracy. I think one thing that helps is that is fits better against my wrist, but they also added in more sensors. 2. How decent is sleep tracking. Very good so far. Measures stages, HR (avg, min), HRV blood O2, "quality" 3. strength training: good with my HR although I don't find HR tracking for strength training to be all that important. 4. Is the 'resources' metric useful as a measure of daily energy? Unlike Garmin, there will be some adjustments, but once you become familiar with TSS, CTL, ATL, and TSB, it becomes helpful for my periodization training. The nice thing is that there are a lot of other apps and programs that use these metrics.
almost my case. I still have garmin fr945, suunto 9 and vertical 1. both suunto have big troubles with hr measurement, sleep accuracy not good. for cycling I have wahoo bolt v2 and v3, for concept2 - only ErgData app. withings smart scales is more than enough for me. one thing for me what suunto is missing is “resume later” function, especially for walking or hiking. I like suunto maps and navigation. now I’m confused to choose vertical 2 or race 2. both have better (I hope so) hr measurement and… thats all. ok ok, vertical 2 have led flashlight. vertical 2 disappointed me without local music storage and without nfc. but I like suunto for menu design, because garmin UI looks like designed for childs - not solid.
Agree! I had used Suunto 9 for years and years and only switched to Suunto Vertical with solar panel recently, got it on Black Friday discount £200 off ❤️
garmin fr55, wahoo element bolt, and occasionally my suunto 9 for multi day hikes...I mix and match
My Suunto 9 works fine. Watches will only pick up GPs when they come out of the water (eg every other stroke of freestyle). Breast stroke, the watch remains underwater. So, the watch is basically recording a breadcrumb trail, which isn't always accurate. Sometimes, cloud cover and rain will also affect the accuracy.
Suunto 9 - works very well but the swim pace is always slower than I think it should be...
Suunto 9 works well. Note that the watch needs to 'see' the satellite so only registers distance when your wrist comes out of the water. Breaststroke may be a problem.
Suunto peak is goated
