And probably modded headbands, they sound amazing but I broke the headband after a few months and I haven't figured out what to do with them since. Flimsiest headphones I've ever put on my head.
If you just want something wired that sounds good and you just don’t know where to start, pick up a pair of Koss Porta Pros or Koss KPH30i. These are between $30-50, and they punch way above their price for sound quality. They’re on-ear headphones that look like they’re straight out of the 80’s (which they are). If you want something a little higher in the scale, consider the FiiO FT1 closed back. They’re $160 but Are definitely in the “worth stretching for” category. If you prefer more acoustic music, consider the Grado sr60x, but then add a pair of Geekria G-pads. Total will be about $120, but frankly that may be the last headphones you need for a long, long time: build quality is questionable a times, but replacement parts are super easy to find. Side note: this is about as different from JBL as I can think of. I highly recommend finding reviews on each of these to see what you might like best.
If you're looking for decent wireless noise cancelling in that price category you can always grab a pair of Soundcore Q30 (or 35 if you can get them used/on sale) For plain old wired headphones in the $30-40 range you can always snag the Koss Porta Pros, or the KPH30i. They sound much better than you'd expect, especially if you swap out the pads. Moving up the price range you'll find things like the Audio Technica ATH-M50x (Wired or Wireless), Grado SR60/80 (Wired), Beyer Dynamics DT770 (Wired). These all sound different, ATH being more bass, Grado lots of Treble, and Beyers are flat. If you like thumpy headphones you can absolutely enjoy Skullcandy Crushers, or Marley over ears. The latter have a pretty solid build quality whereas the other are more affordable. Everyone has a preference, so just enjoy what sounds good to you. I would probably shy away from unreviewed no name headphones like those you linked, though!
Koss (75, 30i, 40) wouldn't be my first pick for metal and they're all on-ear not over-ear, but they are light enough that it shouldn't be a problem. They have basically no sound isolation though so maybe not ideal. I'd also recommend the 688B over the 681 having trialed both.
Looks wise they really are a vibe, and sometimes when you are out and about it's okay, if not ideal, to wear a pair of cheapo headphones that are not too expensive if they break. Bringing a pair of expensive ones and hitting sudden rainfall sounds like an overall crap scenario An upgrade for later would probably be some cheaper KOSS headphones, instead of the Porta Pros. Like, the KPH40 are half the price and still sound pretty nice, and I personally swear by the KPH30i. Cost me less than $30 and they both sound nice for that price and I'm not afraid of them breaking.
KPH30i from Koss. Music makes sense on them. I also like the Moondrop Space Travel a lot. Can't complain at that price.
Ksc75s and KPH30i. I have fully switched over to Koss because they are so good and so lightweight. I keep my DT 770s in my drawer nowadays. I've tried to break up with my KPH30i like 5 times and eventually just gave up and realized that they are my favorite headphones.
Koss kph 40, kph30i (made of plastic and may break more easily.) Both are about $30 on sale. Even 8 yr olds should know good sound. If the kid don't like them you will! Very light and comfortable with surprisingly great sound.
Koss kph 30i and Koss kph 40 on sale for about $40 will get you something enjoyable and of decent build quality, Under $20 probably isn't worth buying. Check out 1More and Soundcore for inexpensive wireless.
Yes kph 40, you can easily change earpads if desired. Very good sound and featherweight. Under $40. Portapro and kph 30i too. Kph 30 wireless if you don't like wired. For much better sound and a step up in quality: Grado 80x and Sennheiser 560s. Comfortable and light but not like the Koss.
Koss KPH30i with the Grado pad mod. It even has a microphone. Daily drivers at the office. Best $40 ever.
My under $100 picks: Koss KPH30i and KPH40i, Philips SHP9500 and SHP9600, Audio-Technica ATH-M40’s (on sale) Sennheiser HD 599’s (also on sale)
