I recently bought the Avocado mattress at Costco (it's a Costco-specific model) and ended up returning it because it was too soft for me. That experience gave me the push to take a chance on the Sleep on Latex Pure Green mattress in Firm (I had two 3" SoL soft toppers and a Birch latex & wool topper on hand, so I felt confident I could make it softer if I needed to). This bed is my soul mate. I literally daydream about it. I have not slept this well in years - maybe decades. I adore it.
Sure! And definitely same! It's hard because it's so subjective. I loved the Avocado, but it didn't love me back. My kiddo has an Avocado kids mattress and I LOVE it - it's the first time it occurred to me that I actually wanted a firmer mattress. I had been on a 3" soft latex toppers on top of an old innerspring mattress because I started having pain in my hips and I thought it was too firm - trying his was a revelation for me. I had no idea my body would like firmer better. Anyway, once we got his mattress I loved it so much, I was sure I wanted an Avocado of my own. Long story short, as I said, the one from Costco was too soft - I realized I couldn't fully relax because my muscles were engaged trying to hold my body in line, if that makes sense? Avocado just came out with a true firm, but to your point about budget, it is $$$$$$ and that was a nope for us. Since we'd been using the toppers, we knew we liked the feel of latex, so we decided to go for the SoL. I was working on the "I can always make it softer on top, but can't really make it firmer or add support" principle when we chose the firm instead of the medium. It is quite firm, but again, I ordered the firm, not the medium. I'm curious what that would feel like, but happy with my choice. If I "stand" on my knee on it I can sink in something like 4 inches or so, and I can press it down to the side rail with my hand if I really try, but lying down it feels pretty solid. There's give - it's latex, not concrete, so it's not really like "lying on the bare floor" (people exaggerate). If you like the feel of latex, I'd say to aim firmer and dial in your comfort level as needed with a topper. In fact, the thing that had us pull the trigger on the return of the Avocado was when we were putting away the guest bed after a family visit and we took a breather on that 3" topper on the floor. My husband and I looked at each other and said, "You gotta be kidding me..." He was like, "If this was the answer all along..." 🤣
Oooh... I didn't, but if those were too firm I'd advise caution on these! I don't have personal experience with the Saatvas or the Casper, but everyone says the SoL is crazy firm, so I'd guess it's a fair bit firmer than those. Though a firmer mattress and a plush topper could very well be the way! I do not have first-hand knowledge of it, but I understand the SoL people will offer a hefty discount on toppers and work with you to find your right "sleep system", or mattress/topper combo. It's definitely hard that there's not really a way to test them (though I understand you can return it relatively easily). I watched a lot of YouTube reviews to try to see what it looked like when squished, if that makes sense?? But there's really only 1 guy I found who was showing the firm, so it was still kind of a gamble that just worked out for us. Again, we figured if the topper on the floor was half decent, we probably couldn't go terribly wrong with the actual mattress! 😅 I know it sounds nuts, but if you have access to that topper, maybe you could try it on the floor for 30 minutes or so just to get a baseline?
I'm short but heavy - about 170. My husband is 6'1" and about 215. Definitely try before you buy, if you can! And I've read you should lie on a mattress for at least 30 minutes to get a real sense of how it feels, which is socially awkward, but when I'm dropping that kind of money I'll be awkward all day 😆 Side note: we were talking about our mattress last night and I realized that the thing that's "weird" about it is that we've gotten used to a sort of "down and then rebound up" feeling when getting onto a traditional bed. Ours doesn't really do that - but once you're still and lying on it, it doesn't feel different from a normal mattress, if that makes sense? All this to say, I think that's part of the "lie on it for a long while" advice. Hope this helps!
I have a very similar deal. Side sleeper that rolls all night and lower back pain. We have an Avocado with no topper (base model I guess) and it’s been good for me. But it’s SO personal. It was firm firm at first but broke in a bit. I actually do really well with the cheaper memory foam matress in a box too. Sleeping on them at BNBs and our spare bedroom when I can’t sleep. The are firm but don’t stress the pressure points.
The Avocado hybrid I had from Costo slept very cool. Maybe the higher end Green will too. Also, bedding is very important. You want everything to be breathable. My current setup is a Winkbed Plus, 1.5" merino wool topper, whisper organics quilted mattress cover, Sleep and Beyond Cotton Percale sheet set, sleep and beyond wool comforter, sleep and beyond percale duvet cover and sleep and beyond Mymerino comforter. It would probably sleep a bit cooler if I remove the whisper organics cover but I wanted some protection for the wool topper since it was pricy. I imagine that setup would sleep extremely cool on an avocado hybrid mattress. The windkbed doesn't exactly sleep warm but I think the avocado was a bit cooler.
Costco does have an Avocado, or at least they did a few months ago. I ordered it online and it was an easy pickup from them when I decided to return it. The bed was very nice, but not firm enough for us. Could be worth trying from Costco if for no other reason than easy returns! We ended up with a Sleep on Latex (which is super firm). That said we still have a “normal” adult mattress in the house from Costco and it’s great too… we keep a mattress protector on it and don’t worry too much about it.
I got the avocado mattress from Costco and it failed the ruler test. I am now returning and likely going to buy the Plank matteess
I highly recommend sleep on latex! We tried the avocado in person and didn’t like it so I’d try it first if possible.
Had an Avocado for 2 years, no sagging but way firmer than expected. Took months to break in and hurt my hips as a side sleeper at first. Consider adding a topper. Also it's insanely heavy.
I thought a hybrid avocado latex mattress. No more waking up with back issues.
We had the naturpedic for a crib mattress. I know they are supposed to be very firm but it was so hard and I wonder if that’s why he didn’t sleep well in his crib. We got a full size Avocado a couple months ago for a floor bed so we can Co sleep and it’s very nice! I will say it felt too soft for the first couple days and we were worried. But it firmed up as it aired out. Now it’s very comfortable. He has been sleeping very wonderfully on it, too.
We have twin and queen mattresses from Avocado. They have a bit of a unique smell occasionally, I think because of the wool, but I don't find it offensive. They are HEAVY though! I also got their twin waterproof mattress protector for one bed and the Naturepedic equivalent for the other, and both of those have worked great for multiple kid related fluids, lol. And just in case you're looking for new pillows to, I switched to a buckwheat hull pillow earlier this year. I love it, and I've heard millet hull ones are even nicer.

We paid a ton of money for our king avocado (from the manufacturer) and 5 years later it dips in the middle. Disappointing bc we have an avocado crib mattress that we used for 2 kids and it’s been fine.
