I’m with you. Really tired of spending $$$. I bought an extra firm at IKEA in August. So far so good.
We also had the hovag and recently upgraded to a valevag when we moved from a double to a king size. 10/10 for a mattress, would recommend.
IKEA Valevag with a latex topper. Mattress is $350 (edit- queen size); topper was $200. You can get a cheaper memory foam topper if you prefer that to latex. Edited to add- I found my topper on Amazon. The mattress by itself is too firm for most people.
Another one saying IKEA - mine is the best mattress I've ever slept on. Unfortunately they don't make the model I have any more, but the replacement (the Valevag) seems to get very good reviews.
I have the VALEVAG which I believe replaced the haugesand. It was the firmest they had on the floor when I went and there’s no tufts or memory foam. Been sleeping on it almost a year now and still like it.
I ordered the valevag mattress from ikea, it ships directly to your home. I've used it for years and would buy it again, especially for the $350 price point.
They review a lot of traditional brands too, they have hundreds of mattresses they’ve reviewed. I think you can get a month’s subscription for under a tenner. I ended up going for the IKEA Valevag firm mattress, many mattresses met all my specific criteria but this was much more affordable and unlike those online mattress-in-a box-brands I was able to try it in the store.
IKEA Valevag. They're brilliant mattresses and incredible value. I've never been disappointed with an IKEA mattress.
Valevag from Ikea is the only option in this price range that I would recommend. We’ve got Hovags on the spare beds in our house and everyone remarks on how good they are - valevag is the new name for them (and packaged differently with a little less cushioning on the top from what I understand) Edit: from taking a look, the vagstranda is on sale for new year so that would also be worth a look. For that much you can absolutely get a quality pocket sprung mattress - don’t let others tell you otherwise!
Seconding the IKEA recommendations. We got our king mattress from them for $500
