We went through this a while back. We went to the mattress store and found what seemed like a good inner spring mattress. We did not like it and ended up sending it back within a month. Then we ordered a soft foam mattress. It was ok for a while, but ended up being too soft and hurting my back. We finally decided to order a Sleep Number bed, and gave the too soft mattress to our daughter. The Sleep Number has been great. You are not locked into any level of firmness or softness because you can adjust it. It has a feature that adjusts the firmness automatically when you roll to your side. We got one of the cheaper Sleep Numbers (I believe it is the C4 series). It is not one that you can raise the head and feet, and does not have any crazy features like temperature control or anything. You do have to buy the integrated box springs with it because the air pumps sit in the base. They can be a bit pricey, so watch for a sale (they have them often.) It looks like right at this second you could get the C4 Queen and base for about $2000.
We've got a split head Sleep Number and it's been great. Can adjust firmness easily. Can put a pad on it if you want. Has really worked out for us.
I’m not a Sleep Number shill, I promise. I bought one eighteen months ago with an adjustable frame and I’ve never slept better. I wake in the same position that I fell asleep in with no pressure point aches or pain and head up so no more GERD wake ups. They are not cheap, but I got what I paid for.
I had a king size sleep number for about two days. No one tells you the king size has a huge, uncomfortable bar down the middle and no matter what you do, the air mattress pushes you towards that bar. You can’t fix air mattress physics. Also, it’s not everything but sex on two twin air mattresses glued together sucks.
I am a side sleeper as well and I sleep with a CPAP mask on. The most comfortable mattress I’ve used is a Stearns & Foster pillow top. Very comfortable and support. Also consider an adjustable base. The sleep number mattresses and base are amazing also because you can adjust the settings. My life goal is to get one.
Cannot recommend sleep number enough for you situation
I like my Nectar mattress that I got on Amazon for less than $700. I prefer it x100 to the SleepNumber that I spent thousands on.
Love our Sleep Number. We’ve had it 5 years or so.
Just speaking from personal experience, my ex and I tried the sleep number mattress and we hated it. Ended up getting a new Beautyrest Harmony in medium firmness. I loved it as is, but it was too firm for her so she got a 1.5” foam topper. I couldn’t stand it. We split and she took the bed, then I got another nearly identical BR Harmony in medium, and love it as is still! So far, the mattress is just on the floor, as I’m building a custom platform bed frame for it https://preview.redd.it/rcig3qol96yf1.jpeg?width=5297&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7452d5d0111d07ab3ce5da3fdf19e429aa88c73
It was okay for me. I found it caused me to play with the numbers a bunch, and it was very hot in the summers. I also think at one or two points over the years I had to patch it. It also sometimes would lose calibration.
