Buy him an Earfun UBOOM X for dorm parties. For his outdoor activities, add the Soundcore Boom 3i. Both speakers should fit within your budget, and they will give your grandson so much more than a Flip or UE Boom would.

Have had ut crankin since 10 am this mornin while workin waitin to see how battery holds up have had it about 60 to 80 percent volume and tuned brightly in app rught now showin about 60 percent battery but soundwise it easily wipes the floor with the jbl flip 7 , the wking d320 doesnt come close to it as far as bass and clarity even with that having 2 tweeters but so far im super impressed with it. For 98 bucjw ya cant go wrong. Headin to lake after work will test the floating on it altho its not how id ever use it lol

I got two 3i's and a boom 2 to try against each other. I agree with the portability of the 3i vs boom 2. The boom 2 is stereo, but the 3i is mono. The TWS paring between the 3i's is way better than my first gen motion +'s. The boom 2 does have some rich bass but the 3i's bass seems to drop out less when the volume is increased. More testing and EQ adjusting to be done before I'm sure about that. I'll likely send back the boom 2 as well. I appreciate the comments.

Soundcore just made the Boom3i. It has a buzz clean feature to clear sand out if you got some in too and cheaper than Jbls its $100 as of now for Prime-Day

I bought both. I returned the boom 2 and keeping the 3i. The 3i can get plenty loud and the portability compared to boom 2 is night and day.

This is sage advice: two speakers for different use cases. I tried to settle on one speaker that would be practical for their grandkid's purposes, that is, parties *and* hiking, camping and water sports, and couldn't. A boombox for when volume and better fidelity is required; a smaller speaker for outdoor on-the-go activities. OP, as well as Earfun and Tribit, Anker (Soundcore) has enough of a lineup to satisfy different criteria. For instance, [Soundcore Boom or Soundcore Boom 2 ](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=anker+soundcore+boom&i=electronics&crid=9EFL7JVSRBJK&sprefix=anker+soundcore+boom%2Celectronics%2C123&ref=nb_sb_noss_1)are smaller boomboxes; the Soundcore Boom 3i is a tough, outdoor, portable speaker.

I tend to purchase smaller sized speakers like the flip, ult field 1, and I purchased the boom 3i to replace my ult field one and the 2 things I dont like about the boom 3i is the bass at loud volumes isn't as punchy as the ult field one, and id go as far to say the ult field one does loudness alot better, which sucks becuase this speaker is advertised at 50w and the ult 1 is 30w. secondly, the battery life is mediocre, but its understandable becuase it maintains a nice deep bass at low to medium volume. So if you regularly play louder music probably go with the ult field one since its about the same size, and if you're going to listen to low to medium volume music, then the boom 3i is perfect.

I had a JBL go 4 and a Flip 7. I returned them both and bought a Soundcore Boom 3i. It's a bit bigger than the options you have listed, but sounds absolutely phenomenal for its size, gets very loud, and it's probably the most rugged speaker I've ever owned. It's still portable enough to where I always keep it with me because it fits nicely in a backpack, suitcase, etc. it comes with a strap (not really that it's remotely large enough to need one) but it was SUPER easy to 3D print a handle for if you prefer to carry it that way. Again, it's not pocket size, so maybe it's bigger than what you're looking for, but I was also in the market for a pocket size speaker and I quickly changed my mind once I tried the Boom 3i

I returned my flip 7 after buying a Boom 3i. Fantastic speaker and I was able to find a good eq for it. Genuinely impressed with what you get for the money with the 3i

I'm a lil late to the reply, but I've got a decent EQ for it if you want me to share it with you. I found a frequency response curve for the 3i with a flat EQ online, and adjusted mine to try and make the inverse of the one I found online (ideally to try and produce as close to a flat response curve as I can with just a slight boost to the bass). It's worth noting I don't have the proper hardware to get my own readings, but I did the best I could and it sounds pretty good. It's also worth noting, there's a guy who's been trashing the speaker for not sounding good, because he adjusted his EQ without having BASS UP on. But, from what I can tell, the bass up is meant to be on by default. Similar to how JBL speakers have their "party extend" button to turn the bass way down to conserve battery, turning bass up off basically just turns the bass way down to save battery.

I've some JBL speakers big and small from the Go 4, a few in the clip series, a party box 300, Flip 7, etc. Personally, I returned my clip, go 4, and flip 7 once I got a Soundcore Boom 3i. It's probably much more rugged than what it sounds like you would use it for, but the sound for its size is nothing short of phenomenal. It has fantastic battery life, and the app support is better than any other speaker than I've ever had. The Boom 3i is honestly my most used speaker by a wide margin atm. I work in a pretty casual office and occasionally do some fabrication, assembly, and testing in the field. I take it with me in my bag for work to play in the office to play quietly, it gets loud enough to drown out anything I need when I'm in the field, it's waterproof and salt water rated for weekend beach trips too. I use it at home for music while I'm cooking, audiobooks during the day when I can work from home, and I pair it to my tv or projector at night when I'm watching movies.

It's the Boom 3i. I bought one and it's a fantastic speaker. Based on its ratings, it's actually even more rugged than a turtlebox! It's IP68 with an additional coating to protect against salt and minor corrosives

It could just be the best ever for their use case. It would be easy for someone to argue that a JBL party box 1000 is the best because it's super loud, has big woofers and produces great sound... But I can't take it anywhere because it's massive. So, to OP, the select 4 go might truly be the absolute best speaker on the market for their use case. For me and my use case, it's a Boom 3i, just happens to be from soundcore as well, but it has the best sound out of the speakers that meet the criteria I need for my use case. It would be easy to argue that, in my eyes, that's the best out there. To each their own
