Does the desk face the wall. If so, find a large monitor that has Vesa mounts that you can mount to the wall with a tv mount so it's out of the way when needed. Anything else will be a pain. I use a ViewSonic portable monitor that's about 16 inches when traveling or working from another room.

T480 with thunderbolt bios patch. No problems with dell 27in and Viewtronic 16in portable monitor, just plug and play.
