Based on 1 year's data from Jan 28, 2026 How it works
I went with the Tapo d225 and really like it.
tapo d225 is both wireless or 24/7 recording if wired, connected to your existing doorbell (8~24Vac, check your existing doorbell transformer output), even the push-in notification is distintive
…by distinctive, it means you will receive a “telephone type” announcement, instead of the traditional push notification message
The tapo d225 (maybe the same with d235) won’t chime the mechanical section, only bypass the ac transformer for powering, and will record 24/7
Yes, if recording 24/7 you will disable the mechanical section (bypass)
Okay I see now what you mean. My Tapo D225, still records even when watching live after clicking on a notification. So this one should do what you want.
Tapo D225 solid . Local storage and good detection. It just doesn’t have rich notifications
I’m currently running it . Switched from a ring doorbell . It has pretty good detection even tells me if there’s a package . The only hang up for me personally is not having rich notifications but if that feature isn’t important to you it’s a phenomenal device . ( rich notifications are available if you subscribe for I think $3 a month)
The user interface sucks compared to others, but everything else is great about Tapo.
Tapo d225 owner here ..no complaints with coverage. I added a solar panel so I didn't have to remove it periodically to charge battery. No subscription, wide fov, and I have it working with other Tapo devices. Example: " when doorbell can detects motion, turn on outside lights for 3 minutes" I seriously thought about another one for the back door that is private and wooded. It's been great.
My personal recommendation is Tapo, specifically the D225. I have two, and they are so feature rich
SD card out of the box but you can run it through a NAS and then to cloud storage if you want to: https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/2680/
I have the Tapo model that's wired & works with our existing doorbell chime that we really like the sound of - so no need to charge or plug in the little chime that comes with. I also don't pay the subscription, just popped a decent SD card in. Recommend it to everyone now who's just looking for a doorbell cam, it's fab. Reolink is another one that I looked at, and will probably go for that brand when updating our other external wired cameras around the house. Found it much easier to navigate building a system vs the likes of Ubiquiti. So u/Logical-Device-5709, if you're planning a larger overhaul I'd recommend a Reolink doorbell cam if you like having everything match.
Tapo wired doorbell with a Tapo hub for indoor storage. Just be aware it won’t do 90 degree image rotation, only 180, so it has to be mounted vertically (portrait) and not horizontally (landscape) to get the proper orientation of the image.
