"just for hiking and trail rubbing ... Personally I wore them for my ultra."

"I'll be wearing the Adidas Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra for them [30 Mile in August at Lean Horse (Custer, SD) on a gravel railroad bed followed by a 50K at the Wolverine State 100 (Alpena, MI) on crushed limestone and then the Dead Horse 50 Mile (Moab, UT) on slickrock]"

"I consider it to be more of a long distance shoe. ... I used it to run up to 100 miles on rough terrain."

"Every blue moon I roll an ankle but that’s because of tough terrain, not boots, and I’ve never injured my ankles in the process."

"way more support than the lone peaks"

"Switched from the Lone Peaks to the Olympus’ and they’re killer. ... Really great for rough terrain. ... Can affirm they worked well for me on rough gravel/boulder strewn terrain."

"First run out with them and set a new PR on one of my regular runs."

"The Catamount 3 makes (me at least) go faster downhill. It's unlike any running shoe I've worn before."

"for smoother/faster stuff switch to the Catamounts ... Love them."

"I was quite impressed with its comfort and trail capabilities, and truly believed I had found an excellent shoe for my long runs and hikes. ... the New Balance Hierro v9 remains my top choice for comprehensive trail running. Its superior comfort and, crucially, its consistently reliable grip in varied and challenging conditions make it a more dependable partner on the trails I typically encounter. ... I feel more secure in the Hierro, and that confidence is key. In fact I will be using it for my upcoming races and that says it all."

"The Vibram Megagrip outsole on the Hierro v9 is simply outstanding. Its 4.5mm lugs provide excellent, reliable traction across various surfaces, from dry dirt to slick roots and muddy patches. I've always felt incredibly secure, and it consistently inspires confidence in diverse conditions. ... Great Vibram outsole grip, even on mud and wet rocks"

"The grip is easily the best of all I have used including the X2s (can't beat vibram megagrip imo)"

"I used them on a 63k/4500m and a 44k/2000m ultra and never thought about my feet."

"i've done rim 2 rim 2 rim, never summer 60k, and the kalalau trail in them and they were aces."

"I've run in Brooks Catamount for everything from one-hour Sunday runs to 35-milers, including several races that were insanely wet and muddy. Paired with Feetures trail socks, I've never had a single problem."

"About a year and the right bud would last about 15 minutes on a full charge."

"I've had them for a few years and now the battery doesn't last for more than 40 mins, so looking for a different model."

"And then during a race in September the mid sole of one pulled right off with less than 200 km on them."

"Also, the grip was really crap, particularly when it’s a purpose built trail shoe."

"Sections of the trail were fairly muddy this time. ... It was there the shoe washed out over and over again. ... The experience was similar to trail running in road shoes. ... There was a total loss of grip. ... We also need to see a shoe with longer lugs and a better lug pattern to give confidence in wet conditions."

"Tried my Ultraventures on a recent high route in wet weather and fell twice on slick rock/moss, they are relegated to cutting the grass now."

"Catamounts were horrrrrendous for me. ... I could barely walk let alone run a mile and a half without getting the worst shin splints I've ever had."

I wear Glys and wear trail runners, if you just like brooks try the catamount 2s or 3s, great beginner trail shoes. If you are looking outside the brand I really like the Nike zegama 2s, I plan to wear those on my next ultra

I had the catamount 2. Great for flat stuff, very snappy. Did a VK in them though and the heel slippage was so bad I thought I was gonna start bleeding from the chafe

I love the Brooks Catamount 2. I’m trying the Catamount 3 right now but will probably end up ordering a few pair of the 2’s to use until they’re nla.

I have Brooks Catamount (Both 2 & 3) and I like them a lot. They loose some spring/cushion after a few hundred miles but they still look new. I don’t know that it’s realistic to expect the foam to stay bouncy for five hundred hard miles.

r/trailrunningLooking for a Trail Running Shoe for Short Races – With Enough Support for a Heavier Runner
11 months ago

Im ~85kg and found that i prefer firm and responsive when running (short) races, with a not-too-stretchy upper. I think the brooks catamount could be a good option - they feel fast, stable and sturdy (i have the 2’s). The kjerags works well for me too i must say.

You might have luck with Brooks Catamount or Cascadias! They both are fairly narrow and have a protective rock plate. I also love Topo Mtn Racers- they have a wider toe box but are narrower everywhere else, and they have vibram soles with great traction. As a general heads up, I have narrow feet too and swear by heel lock lacing- it’s been a game changer and prevents a lot of heel slipping!

I have a broad forefoot and a narrow heel. Brooks has been good to me as well as La Sportiva. Prodigo Pros and Caldera 8 is what I am working with now. For faster nimbler shoe I have been using the Catamount. Not sure about this latest version, haven't tried it.

r/trailrunningWhich shoes would you recommend for day hiking that aren't traditional shoes but not trail running shoes either?

Idk if it’s a “heavy” enough option but I’ve enjoyed backpacking in the Brooks trail shoes. I wore the catamount for a 2 day 14-mile trip through the desolation wilderness in Tahoe and loved them. No blisters and felt a lot more nimble than my buddies in hiking boots.
