"the shoes felt great, had no slippage whatsoever, were cushioned, responsive, and comfortable. I ran up and down the mountain without much concern about where my feet were placed... the shoes handled it wonderfully."

"If you're a bigger guy and are looking for a road-to-trail, groomed trail, gravel shoe.... Buy with confidence!"

"slightly tougher/longer lasting tread than speedgoats ... Challengers can tolerate it due to the tougher outsole ... nothing stops you from almost literally running them into the ground with how much of an outsole they've got on them."

"S-tier: Asicsgrip. ... Tested it on mossy wet rocks by the waterfall. ... Beats megagrip"

"I've done super fast series on technical terrain where at first I would've swear I was about to kill myself but nope."

"They also have the best sole material I’ve found for slippery mud and rocks."

"for smoother/faster stuff switch to the Catamounts ... Love them."

"I just feel really quick and nimble on a rooty or rocky trail"

"great energy return for fast miles"

"I used them on a 63k/4500m and a 44k/2000m ultra and never thought about my feet."

"i've done rim 2 rim 2 rim, never summer 60k, and the kalalau trail in them and they were aces."

"I've run in Brooks Catamount for everything from one-hour Sunday runs to 35-milers, including several races that were insanely wet and muddy. Paired with Feetures trail socks, I've never had a single problem."

"I’ve tried my families Miele canister when I lived with them and never got the hang of it. ... How do you manage the canister? We have a small space and based on my experience it seems like I would trip over it. Even when I tried it in a bigger place I still carried the canister around which was super annoying just to not trip on it ... The space is small enough that it has dead ends without enough space to turn around by pulling the canister. Is there a way that same concept can still be applied? We’re talking bedsides with only 1.5’ space, 4’ hallway with a litter box at the end, 5’ kitchen width with dead end."

"I'll be damned if I'm going to drag that thing up and down three floors regularly."

"I used to hate speed goats for uphill because they’re so chonky that I felt like I couldn’t get onto my tippy toes on steep climbs."

"And then during a race in September the mid sole of one pulled right off with less than 200 km on them."

"My Timps got holes after 4 weeks of wearing lol ... Forgot exactly where but it was the toe box. ... Never seen running shoes with such a shitty build quality before. ... Altra is definitely skimping on the materials since they were sold a few years ago."

"I beat the ever living shit out of my shoes in the Colorado high country and have had to shoe goo the soles twice in spots so it’s definitely not bomb proof."

"Catamounts were horrrrrendous for me. ... I could barely walk let alone run a mile and a half without getting the worst shin splints I've ever had."

I’ve had multiple pairs of both brands & have a pair of 1st gen Catamounts still. It’s a real hard choice, love my Catamounts. Also love my Triumphs!

I know la sportiva kaptiva and use them for technical terrain. Akasha is a strange shoe for me … only works on forefoot. I also use speedgoat 5 and like it - can’t go wrong with 5 or 6. Mafate Speed also more for technical. I have also experience with catamount 1 and catamount 3. I don‘t have any experience with saucony peregrine. Over all the catamount 3 ist for me the most interesting shoe right now: fast on forefoot, rolling in the center and a softer feel on the heel than the speedgoat. No Vibram but the rubber of the 3 feels pretty sticky. All in all a really great shoe of it‘s not muddy. If la sportiva - I would give the prodigio or jackal boa a try. More modern kind of shoe. But: depending on your weight, fitness level, and your foot …

r/ultrarunningBest trail shoes for haglunds / insertional achilles issues (soft heel counter)?

I've been dealing with insertional Achilles tendonitis recently and similar pain at the back of the heel. The most comfortable shoe in my rotation is Salomon S/lab Pulsar. It has a soft and pliable heel counter. The second most comfortable is probably NNormal Kjerag. Also I have an old pair of Brooks Catamount, which is the 1st version of the shoe. It is pretty comfortable too.

r/trailrunningWhat's your preferred trail running shoe for (US) northeast trails?

Northeast trail runner here as well, and am all too familiar with the hunt for the perfect shoe. I’m presently in Brooks Calderas. They’re tanks, and I love them because of it. Tons of protection underfoot and toe for all those pointy rocks and roots we deal with. They’re great for eating up high mileage days, and feel light enough for shorter midweek runs. For shorter, 25k or less, races I’m using the Brooks Catamount Agil. Love those as well, they’re like a beefed up XC spike; and just make you want to go fast! Super confident footing and good toe protection as well.

r/trailrunningLooking for a Trail Running Shoe for Short Races – With Enough Support for a Heavier Runner
11 months ago

Im ~85kg and found that i prefer firm and responsive when running (short) races, with a not-too-stretchy upper. I think the brooks catamount could be a good option - they feel fast, stable and sturdy (i have the 2’s). The kjerags works well for me too i must say.

You might have luck with Brooks Catamount or Cascadias! They both are fairly narrow and have a protective rock plate. I also love Topo Mtn Racers- they have a wider toe box but are narrower everywhere else, and they have vibram soles with great traction. As a general heads up, I have narrow feet too and swear by heel lock lacing- it’s been a game changer and prevents a lot of heel slipping!

I have a broad forefoot and a narrow heel. Brooks has been good to me as well as La Sportiva. Prodigo Pros and Caldera 8 is what I am working with now. For faster nimbler shoe I have been using the Catamount. Not sure about this latest version, haven't tried it.
