"I even washed them accidentally and still worked perfectly fine afterwards."
"Been using them for about four years working out in my gym, and cycling daily (45+ minutes on a bicycle outdoors)."
"They last absolutely forever (I know 1980s models still in daily use)"

"super comfy (my knees ache so much less on descents with them) ... I can’t stress enough how much they’ve helped my bad left knee on descents."

"I was quite impressed with its comfort and trail capabilities, and truly believed I had found an excellent shoe for my long runs and hikes. ... the New Balance Hierro v9 remains my top choice for comprehensive trail running. Its superior comfort and, crucially, its consistently reliable grip in varied and challenging conditions make it a more dependable partner on the trails I typically encounter. ... I feel more secure in the Hierro, and that confidence is key. In fact I will be using it for my upcoming races and that says it all."
"The Vibram Megagrip outsole on the Hierro v9 is simply outstanding. Its 4.5mm lugs provide excellent, reliable traction across various surfaces, from dry dirt to slick roots and muddy patches. I've always felt incredibly secure, and it consistently inspires confidence in diverse conditions. ... Great Vibram outsole grip, even on mud and wet rocks"
"The Trabuco 12 have been the best trail shoes I’ve ever owned. ... I’m 6”4 and charge hard over serious rocky terrain…and I feel completely safe in them."

"Got me through a week with everything Utah can throw at you - snow, mud, dirt, gravel, sand, slickrock, slot-canyon scooting, and the occasional stream crossing - and I never felt unsure of my footing."
"can be used perfectly well on the road/treadmill too ... are the only shoes I pack if I'm heading to mixed terrain running locales. ... I was in Palm Springs just last week & did some short but gnarly trails ([Bump & Grind](https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/us/california/bump-and-grind-trail)), a road run and a treadmill workout, all in the same pair of Xero's."
"As far as grip goes, all three are excellent. It's truly amazing how good they are at gripping scree, sand, and unstable terrain."

"About a year and the right bud would last about 15 minutes on a full charge."
"I've had them for a few years and now the battery doesn't last for more than 40 mins, so looking for a different model."
"And then during a race in September the mid sole of one pulled right off with less than 200 km on them."

"Literally too heavy and causes me wrist pain lmao. ... I bought a 502x as like a "let's see" and it was immediately giving me wrist pain."
"actually made my wrist actively hurt while using it ... It's so bad for ergo."
"It's too damn narrow at the grip. ... Anything under 63mm grip area width gave me cramps in my hand"

"they break down incredibly fast ... each time it feels like they last for a shorter number of miles ... For me, they've started breaking down after about 200 miles ... my current pair has holes in the front of the sole ... My other 2 pairs got a hole near the heel part of the sole; rocks would get in and while running they would hit my heel which was quite painful"

"They are incredibly unstable on anything even remotely uneven, hit a rock wrong and goodbye ankle."
"I had two pairs that only lasted 150 miles each for me before the tread wore down enough that I couldn’t wear them on technical terrain ... They would probably last longer on less rocky desert terrain!"
"they shit clumpy things with even shittier grip on muddy terrain"

"An almost new pair I wore in a mountain 100 was dead after the race. ... It was all stretched out and even had a hole in the side when it wasn't that crazy technical of terrain."

"sucks big time on road. ... I would not take the Speedgoat 5 on the road."
"Indeed the vibram lugs after 18 months of using mostly on hard surfaces were destroyed on one side. ... And that may happen in general to trail shoes with big lugs instead of more asphalt oriented outsole."
"Cumbersome? Yes, they feel dead on my feet."
You’re on the right track if you want Bushido but with more cushion then the obvious first port of call is the La Sportiva Mutant. If you want even more cushion and slightly less technical capability then try Akasha or Prodigio. Otherwise something like Salomon S lab Alpine, or S lab Ultra. Nnormal Kjerag is another very technically capable shoe but also known for being low stack, perhaps more comfortable for running than Bushido though (I haven’t tried both so can’t confirm). My controversial pick that others may balk at is Speedgoat 5s and 6s. They’re not necessarily nimble but they do have Vibram Megagrip and I’ve really appreciated their ability to scramble.
So I loved the Speedgoat 5 (wide), the 6 is ok but just isn’t the same. Kind of makes me sad. Challenger is different but I think I like it more than the 6. I know this is probably the wrong sub but does anyone have a road shoe that gives me those SG5 feels with a tread I won’t wear off in a month on the pavement?
I daily wear trail runners. Hoka speedgoat 5s felt like they wore out really quick (but super comfy and I'd do it again if they still made them). Wearing challengers now and I feel like they're doing just fine though. Probably a different compound or something. I'd imagine the answer is just "it depends"
if you are in asics n like asics fit, maybe Fuji n Trabuco also something you should look into. for my light gravel, i have Novablast3 TR, n sometimes also got away with Adizero SL2. but my long distance trail shoes are Torrent2, Speedgoat5, XodusUltra2 n just newly acquired EndorphinRift. among my lineup, SG5 probably overkill for something under 30km. for Salomon, most reviewer would highlight about its narrowness. take note
i used xu2 for my utmb chiangmai 100k n verbier 100k, theyre plenty cushioned. prior to these 2 races, i used sg5 for transjeju 100k n chiangmai 50k, also comfy. the reason i went for xu2 for my recent races coz theyre less 'bulky' than sg5. so far for my races with dropbag access, i havent swap shoes despite having 2nd shoe in bag, but i do swap socks n insoles(when theyre damp)
where are you from? are you into shopping china shoe? i have SG5, and currently im running in Li-Ning Di Lu2 (arnv009), and its as close to SG5, or even better midsole feel. only thing, its kinda 0.5cm short on its sizing
Speedgoat 5’s I went through 6 pairs on my triple crown hikes. I’ll never wear another shoe on trail.
12,650 miles total hiked on long distance trails were all in trail runners. I’ll be on the CDT sobo this year with Speedgoat 5’s I only wear hiking boots if I’m helping with trail maintenance.
I used these and SpeedGoat 5 currently. Im so bad at telling the difference between shoes. I can't tell if its a blessing or a curse. No shoes feel faster/slower than another after about a half mile of a run.
Everyone's feet are different shapes and sizes. What works for one may not work for another. But anecdotally, I will say I've liked each trail shoe I've punched based on this subs suggestions in the past. I have narrowish feet. I've run a 50 mile race on Nike Zegama 2s, and a 50K long run on Hoka Speed Goat 5s. And trained on trails in both shoes. I like both of them, and would repurchase again if I wasn't one to try New shoes just because. I just picked up Speed Goat 6s tonight and will be running a 30 miler on Sunday in them. (Last long run before a 115 mile race at the end of the month) I can report back her what I think of them post run if interested. I plan on splitting the 115 mile race between all 3 shoes. Again, I can report back on how each one feels during the same race.
I’m a true believer that Hoka screwed the pooch on the Speed Goat 6s. The 5s were fantastic shoes.
Yeah, I have about 22 pairs in my current rotation 😬 plus a couple unused backups in storage of some faves lol. But there are a few that are very close to retiring. I normally run 6 days a week, at least one of them on trails. I have 4 pairs of trail shoes that I'm rotating through (2 x Speedgoat 5, Trabuco 12, Caldera 6). They all have close to 500km on them. I have recently bought Salomon Genesis and Saucony Xodus Ultra 3, but haven't tried either yet since I'm now tapering for an 80k race and don't want to risk trying anything new. The Speedgoat 5 has been my favourite shoe for a while, but I have enjoyed the Trabuco a lot as well. I generally prefer them if there's both road and trail. My boyfriend used to think my shoe collection was insane, but I normally run 80-100km per week, so he sees that they are all getting used regularly and doesn't complain anymore lol [https://imgur.com/a/METTAiM](https://imgur.com/a/METTAiM)
where did your SG5s breakdown? like is it the upper, the foam went dead or the lugs? i have a pair thats still going strong at 200 miles but now i'm worried b/c everyone seem to be saying there's a sharp drop off at some point
Oh wow I’m on PNW too I’m surprised the vibram gets worn from the soft and muddy trails. That’s not good!
I've the Speedgoat 5 and Zegama 2. The Zegama are way better for me, in particular for long runs 20k+, as I'm getting blisters with the SG5s. Zegama's are so much more comfortable and better fitting and they work very well on tarmac too. Due to the stack height, they are not the most stable, so I wouldn't recommend them for highly technical trails or muddy stuff (but I'd say that's true for the SG5s too). Next trail shoe purchase will be Zegama's again, my feet do love them.
Yeah. I panic-bought three pairs of SG5’s. Down to my last pair, so I’ve been rotating new shoes into the mix to find a replacement that comes close.
I have had a few trail running shoes. Xodus Ultra, Lone Peak, Terrex Agravic Speed, and now Speedgoats. They are all so different. Road shoes seem to be convalescing around some common principles related to uppers and midsoles, but trail shoes are still all over the place. I like a good heel counter in a trail shoe. Right now my favorites are my Speedgoat 5s. They were half the price of the Speedgoat 6 and they are really comfortable.
When we went to Costa Rica I brought one pair of shoes - Hoka Speedgoat 5s. Wore them in the airport, shopping in town, on some fairly gnarly hikes around the volcano, and did some hilly trail runs around the hotel too. When we went to Tokyo I did the same thing but with New Balance 1080v13s. They were my only shoes, and we walked probably 15 miles a day, plus 3-5 mile runs in the mornings. When we went to Amsterdam I wore Brooks Glycerins. They were a great do-it-all shoe also.
