r/UKRunnersA really boring question about trail running shoes on the road
4 months ago

Not tried the trailfly. I have the Parkclaw's and find them fine on tarmac. They are a touch skittish in the wet though. Would say most of my runs are 50% tarmac. Certainly not slow. Think there's a bit more drop on them than the trailfy which helps. I do also have some road shoes and wouldnt just train for an event on the Parkclaws though. Personally I'm in the wear different trainers for training runs camp. As in I think it helps to build resilience.

I have this need. I live in an area where you run 0.7 miles to get to the Thames Path, then maybe 3 miles through fields, and a mile on road through the next town, and another 2 miles offroad, then a mile on road again - maybe 2, then 4 miles offroad, then next town, and so on. You can go 20-30 miles like this - maybe 1/3 road, 2/3 off. I bought inov-8 Parkclaw for this and they're ok.

r/trailrunningTrail shoes vs road shoes for mixed terrain?

Normal road shoes can handle that. Unless you're running in autumn and winter and those paths turn muddy, then it's nice to have shoes with lugs. I use road-to-trail shoes for that, the Inov8 Parkclaw.

New Balance Hierro, they're plush, cushioned, comfortable, grippy, but also a bit slow and heavy. Great hiking shoe as well. Inov8 Parkclaw: jack of all trades, master of none. Very durable, very allround, comfortable right out of the box, but the cushioning doesn't give much energy return so it feels a bit old fashioned and a little bit uninspiring. Doesn't feel like a trail shoe when running on road, but it does have trail shoe features like (mild) lugs, toe protector, ankle collar. It has a really wide toe box but also a good lockdown. Nike Vomero: cushioned road shoe that has an outsole tread pattern that is much more trail-like than other road shoes

Because everybody else already mentioned Topo, I'll say Inov8

I have a pair of Inov8 parkclaws that have more than 300 kms on them including obstacle courses and rope climbs and they look like they're new. They're not perfect, but they are the most durable running shoes I've owned.

The Inov8 graphene G-grip I have are awful on wet surfaces, but they last a long time, I have approx. 400 km on my G280 parkclaws and the outsole is almost like new. Their sticky grip outsole is apparently what you need for better grip.

r/trailrunningWhat does your current shoe rotation look like?

Funny to see multiple adidas shoes listed here, they don't get mentioned a lot in this sub. My rotation: * VJ Lightspeed: OCR training (interval based so the running sections are faster) * VJ Spark: OCR races (continuous slower pace) * Inov8 parkclaw g280: road to trail runs, I only have non-technical trails where I live, those only require mild trail shoes in autumn and winter (eyeing to replace this with Salomon Aeto Blaze GRVL or other mild trail shoes) " New Balance More V4: road runs and summer trails * New Balance Hierro V6: retired, now used for hiking

r/trailrunningAnyone else feel like trail shoes wear out *way* faster than road shoes?

That's correct, I used my Salomon speedcross to much on hard surfaces and the lugs under the ball of my feet were worn down after 250 km. Inov8 G grip underneath my parkclaw g280s on the other hand is still barely worn after almost 500 km of which 70/30 offroad/onroad

Any trail shoe will wear down faster on pavement than it will on trails, so as long as you're aware that your use case will result in a shorter lifespan for your shoes, then yes, there are trail runners that would work well in this situation. Look for something with shorter/flatter lugs and a durable sole. Since you're in the UK, it should be relatively easy to find inov-8 shoes to try on. I might recommend the Parkclaw for this situation, they're intended for road and trail.

r/hikinggearAre my feet just too wide for trail runners?

To echo other commenters, I now wear Inov8 wide fit trail runners and road runners after struggling to find shoes that worked for my wide feet and high instep, and could not recommend more! eta: I wear Trailflys for running and smaller hikes and Rocklite Pros for longer hikes (still on a trail runner last but has ankle support which is my preference)

Asics trabucos might be worth a look. Inov8 aren't that wide apart from the toe box. I tried their wide fit and found trabucos to be wider around the arch of your foot. I have flat-ish arches so find it very uncomfortable if my foot ends up collapsing over the end of the shoe. Tried lots of Hoka, couldn't find a comfortable fit in any. Only downside to trabucos is the mid sole isn't very energetic and they are very "ploddy" to run in. If you want to be fast then look elsewhere. Be aware they moved the toe bumper internally on the 13s and they can rub so all of the above is based on the 12s.

r/trailrunningWhy are so many trail shoes now high stack + high drop?

I started noticing this a couple years ago and planned accordingly. For me I have huge feet and it's hard to find good shoes. For those in my situation and like a low drop and low rise, look into Inov-8. I've only bought these shoes since early '23 and I hope they never change.
