Inov8 - TRAILFLY MAX

If you like inov8 you probably won't get on with Salomon, they are super narrow. The xodus ultra is a good shoe though. Maybe you could try topo vista if you won't need too much grip. They are foot shaped like inov8 and nicely cushioned. To me they support my foot better than the trailfly max, which gives no stability

Inov8 trailfly max are wide and cushioned. They're more a summer trail shoe. The new trail talon max would be the more aggressive lugged alternative if you were to run in mud

Yeh xtalon long lugs, mud and rain + gaitors is a must for me with my lab running through hilly woods. I only wear them for that occasion and lasting me years. I wanted to get trailfly max when I saw I pic of them, went to the shop to try them and the shallow heel cup was the reason I'm looking elsewhere, different brands.

Just for statistics: I still really like them. After the updates to all the product lines they fit my feet even better. Luck of the draw I guess. First used the Trailtalon 235 in 2019 followed by two pairs of the Trailfly G270 V1 and a Trailfly G300Max. So I never wore the fell running models of the glory days everyone seems to miss so much. Now using Mudtalon Speed, Trailfly Speed and Max Models. They fit loose in the heel which you can counter with adjusted lacing. All of them are extremely durable with good grip. I also like the wider toe box. The look is quite dated and uninspiring though.

I trail run in Inov-8’s. They have phenomenal trail shoes of varying drop amounts, and all models have a wide option. I’m using a 6mm drop wide TrailFly Max right now. They’re a British brand and still not widely known in the US, but I’m US-based and have been swearing by them for over 15 years now.

Always always always Inov-8 shoes. Still love my Nathan running vest for hydration for longer trail runs.

I'm in Inov8 right now and pretty happy. I have a wide forefoot that blisters badly in narrow shoes. I did Altra for a while, but started struggling to get over 300mi in them - build quality seemed to drop. I switched to Topo for a bit, but the high arch support messed up my low arch feet. Inov8 in wide has enough room in the toebox and also has the high build quality of the Topos. I'm doing Trailfly Max for trail and Roadfly Max for road. Just did a 100mi a few weeks ago in them and it's the first one I've ever done with zero blisters.

I haven't tried the Trailfly Speed, but I do run in the Trailfly Max. Great quality and has a wide enough toebox for me. They do great on most trails and they're one of the more comfortable trail shoes for road segments that I've worn. The only negative is that grip isn't the best if you run in a lot of wet conditions. I did a race recently with a lot of wet rock and I was slipping a lot. If you're not on wet rock too much, they're great shoes.

I'm loving the Roadfly Max right now. I'm using it for door to trail on mild dry trails right now. Going to be ordering a pair of Trailfly Maxes as soon as I wear out the Altra Experience Wilds I'm using for wet and technical trail right now.

I started in Altras, did a short stint in Topos (didn't work for me because the arch support was too high for my feet) and now I've switched over to Inov8. I run Roadflys on road and flat trail and Trailflys for wet conditions or anything more technical. They have an anatomical foot shape, wide toebox, and high build quality. Iirc, they have like 3 different cushion levels for each shoe.

For flat feet, stay away from Topo - they have super high arch support that caused me major issues even with just low arches. I've been having good luck with Inov8 lately and have also heard really good things about Norda. Altra Experience Wilds were also nice. Hokas in a wide didn't work for me because they only widen the midfoot, but still have a pointy little toebox. Xodus Ultras were also a bit too narrow in the toebox for me for anything over 50k.

If you have high arches, maybe try Topo. I can't wear them because the arch support is too high for me, but they're high quality other than that. Heel and midfoot aren't too huge to feel sloppy, but they have a spacious toebox. I can also recommend Inov8. That's what I'm wearing primarily right now and I love them. Not as wide as something like Altra, but still more spacious than most in the toebox with a nice anatomical foot shape. They're great quality too - my current pair is at 400mi and they're still in great shape - much more than could be said about the last couple of pairs of Altras that I had.

About the same spot my last two pairs of Altras separated. I made the mistake of posting about it in the Altra sub and got yelled at for daring to step foot on a dry flat trail in a road shoe. I've moved on to Inov8 and been pretty happy.

Normal width, large toe box See altra, topo, inov8. I’ve actually found Hoka challenger 8 (wide) to be a little bit snugger than inov8 trailfly max (wide).

I'll echo the same sentiment. 2015-2018 I wore quite a few different Inov8 shoes for various reasons. I loved just about everything I tried for the gym or trail. Fast forward to today, I picked up a lightly used Trailfly Max and tested them on my typical 7 mile trail run. Awful. Completely off. * Heel cup was to shallow. * The inserts were very uncomfortable and rigid. * The left shoe drives my ankle down and left, rolling it naturally. * Lack of grip on any rock type surface. Bummed. The laces and tongue are even cheap. Compared to a similar Asics model I purchased the quality isn't close at all.

How frustrating! Inov8 shoes in wide fit might work, then. I found the Trailfly Max wide throughout but my heel slipped as my heel is narrow. There are other models in wide as well. Their return system works well. Good luck!

I’ve only ever gone with separate shoe/ gaiter combos rather than inbuilt so can’t comment here unfortunately. I have the Trailfly Max for long distance stuff and they are super comfortable but do have a lot of lateral movement in the heel. Brilliant for long stretches of bridleway, they eat up easy miles for fun. In your position, I’d go with something more stable as you navigate tricky coastal paths through the night (standard Trailfly?) and perhaps the Trailfly Max or similar for the next day when you have better visibility and need more comfort. I had a pair of Speedgoat 5’s and they were good for 50ks but I found the toe box quite narrow. I didn’t enjoy the grip on the Xodus. Ultra Glide 2 is another good option which has comfort/good lockdown if you don’t mind the Salomon lacing system.
