Inov8 - TRAILFLY ULTRA G 300 MAX

Say it...the shoes look shit. I love my trailfly 300 (despite nearly falling off the top of Tryfan) but they do look like i bought them from the Early Learning Centre. It's like the actively try to pick awful colours, but struggle to do that. There are smaller brands making half decent looking shoes (Norda, Mount to Coast).

I've been using Inov8 TrailFlys and love them. Probably easier to get where you are. If you can find the Ultra 300 G (discontinued) in your size, that's my favorite for racking up miles in the Sierra.

I was / am a fan boy of Inov8 trail shoes but it seems like they rebrand everything in the Trailfly line up at the same time. Why can we not ever just go back and get the same model again. I do have 3 pairs of the trailfly 270 in the boxes left and they are my favorite. But it seems the 280 and the 300 are gone? I had been using all 3 and would get a couple more 300's if they were available.

Just for statistics: I still really like them. After the updates to all the product lines they fit my feet even better. Luck of the draw I guess. First used the Trailtalon 235 in 2019 followed by two pairs of the Trailfly G270 V1 and a Trailfly G300Max. So I never wore the fell running models of the glory days everyone seems to miss so much. Now using Mudtalon Speed, Trailfly Speed and Max Models. They fit loose in the heel which you can counter with adjusted lacing. All of them are extremely durable with good grip. I also like the wider toe box. The look is quite dated and uninspiring though.

I ran a lot in the G300 Max. Then I used different brands but have recently gotten TrailTalon both the regular and the Max due to the 6mm lugs. Especially the Max is quite enjoyable to run in.

The new shoes from Inov8 have quite good room in the toe box.

The old Inov8 Trailfly G300 were perfect for this. They’ve been replaced with the new Trailfly but they have nowhere near as much cushion now and the max version with extra cushioning is a huge stack height so makes me prone to a rolled ankle. GYX shoes in my opinion aren’t great in the UK, bogs go in the top and you end up with your feet swimming because the water can’t get out. I much prefer a well draining shoe and a good pair of merino socks so you don’t get blisters My first trail she were the brooks cascadia which I’d I would recommend as a first trail shoe tbh. But for once you start doing more bogs/ deep mud/ grass etc they’re not great so are definitely a beginner trail shoe/ dry trail shoe (dry trail is hard to come by in winter though!)

I may be headed in the other direction with my feet becoming more shoe shaped but not sure which is better haha. Haven’t tried Asics since I hear most are narrow but I do see on Runrepeat the Trabuco Max is pretty wide for some reason. For my Roadfly I’m just over 200 miles in but from how they look I think I’ll be at over 400 before I start to see real wear where I pronate pretty bad. I’ve been doing most easy running on trail so they really haven’t been getting as much use. They do seem like the most solid road shoes I’ve ever had so I’d probably always have a pair in the rotation. My old trailflys from a few years back were/still are completely bulletproof besides developing a rocker after 350 miles so I’m sure these will be even better with the new midsole. For some reason I’m not getting as good of a fit with the new trailfly max as I do with the Roadfly so probably taking a break from their trail stuff. If you can find a pair of Trailfly Ultra G300 Max’s I’d definitely give them a try over the new ones. My feet felt less beat up running a 50k in those than long runs in the new ones even with the old tongue being useless. I wouldn’t say they’re the most stable though so they’re not the best for real technical stuff.

Here’s my n=1. I’ve done several 50k runs (mostly forest trails, few rocks) on Inov-8 trailfly ultra G 300 Max. Great shoes for both training and going the full distance.
