"I put them in my ear, put the helmet on, then do one final “push” with my finger to seat them in my ear for the ride. ... The batteries die before they work out of my ear."
"they are so comfortable that both I and my husband have had to feel our ears to check whether we were still wearing them."
"Also super bonus I've never head banged with earphones this hard besides with these soundcores, they stick to me like glue even when I'm in a metal mood and I'm headbanging for a good hour."

"Coming from the Razer viper ultimate at around 74 grams to the X2 Crazylight at 35 is a surreal experience, the mouse is basically as light as a feather to pick up and move it almost seems like it's not even there. ... As a fingertip grip user the feel of using a mouse this light is bar none, it makes it so much easier to pick up and re adjust and just moving it around with your wrist in fine movements it feels much more accurate and controllable."
"After the third run of another 15 miles a few days ago, I was sold and grinning from ear-to-ear afterwards. It's light, fast and propulsive, responsive, stable, nimble, grippy, comfortable, and protective. It pretty much does it all in a very lightweight package."
"it weighs under 350g"

"I didn’t slip once. The new soles on these shoes had an awesome grip on the mountain. I felt very secure."
"the shoes felt great, had no slippage whatsoever, were cushioned, responsive, and comfortable. I ran up and down the mountain without much concern about where my feet were placed... the shoes handled it wonderfully."
"Got me through a week with everything Utah can throw at you - snow, mud, dirt, gravel, sand, slickrock, slot-canyon scooting, and the occasional stream crossing - and I never felt unsure of my footing."

"they are extremely durable. ... I’ve got well over 1000 miles out of a pair and they still have grip and the uppers are in great shape"
"I've used them for 1500 miles of multi-day hiking with no issues!"
"But I got 900 miles out of one pair of Lone Peaks on the PCT, and 750 from another pair."

"They also have the best sole material I’ve found for slippery mud and rocks."

"where it bends in front by the toes is pinching the side of my foot."
"They fit more rigid with more pressure points and have less room in the tow box. ... They were never as comfortable out of the box or hiking as a topo athletic shoe and I’ve had several pairs. ... I’m always very ready to take these shoes off at the end of the day.. ... after a long day, my feet feel like they were in a rock crusher since the cushion 0%."
"I hate how narrow the toe box is. ... It’s causing issues. ... I simply can’t run in them any longer. ... That is not the case, at least for my foot. ... I can’t imagine how narrow earlier versions were!"

"they are not sturdy. ... Actually, I think I’m on my 5th pair in 2 years and I am a weekend overnight backpacker. ... I’ve had the treads come loose less than 15 miles out of the box. ... Their durability is crap to the point it’s hard to believe a legit company accepts this as their product."
"My Timps got holes after 4 weeks of wearing lol ... Forgot exactly where but it was the toe box. ... Never seen running shoes with such a shitty build quality before. ... Altra is definitely skimping on the materials since they were sold a few years ago."
"I beat the ever living shit out of my shoes in the Colorado high country and have had to shoe goo the soles twice in spots so it’s definitely not bomb proof."

"the middle of the sole doesn’t have any grip on the bottom, literally just a plastic plate with branding on it. ... I found myself slipping on rocks right jn that section of the sole which led to some of my biggest spills."
"speedcross is way too slippery on wet rocks and roots downhill."

"They’re almost like running in cleats ... I’m finding that after 8+ miles on the rocks, roots, and moss of Pisgah — i can feel my feet tiring… I need something more comfortable"

"they retain too much water ... I’ve still been running in them in a very rainy city"
"they take too long to dry when they inevitably get wet anyway"
"I also wish I had the GTX version because they wet out crossing snow or shaking dew off plants."
I wore [these](https://www.rei.com/product/209916/salomon-speedcross-6-trail-running-shoes-womens?sku=2099160145&store=142&CAWELAID=120217890018822448&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=113279951473&CATCI=pla-309904560692&cm_mmc=PLA_Google%7C21700000001700551_2099160145%7C309904560692%7CBA%7C71700000074422625&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD_DTlwiliB2yklNnrMyVo5vBQNoS) and they were plenty. Lightweight with great tread for gripping, and our trail was very muddy.
I keep going back to[ ](https://productpickzone.blogspot.com/2025/06/salomon-speedcross-6.html)[this shoe](https://productpickzone.blogspot.com/2025/06/salomon-speedcross-6.html). It grips like crazy on muddy trails and doesn't kill my feet on long runs.
Is there any reason OP can’t buy a second pair once/if the first pair dies? He mentions U.S. parks so is there a reason he can’t stop at a nearby REI to replace the first pair? (I get packing light and only taking one pair at a time but seems like it would be replaceable…) So absolutely trail runners. I like Salomon Speedcross, which I’ve worn for city walking and running (in addition to hiking and trail running). That makes the lugs wear off faster, obviously, but I’ve still gotten 500+ miles from each pair.
Seconded. Great shoe for hiking and trail running. Never tried the Goretex version but Salomon does make them.
Salomon Speedcross has excellent grip on wet rocks and mud. Comes in both GTX and non-GTX version, but I’ve only tried the latter since it dries quickly anyway and I wouldn’t do waterproof shoes in above freezing weather. I hiked the TMB (with a heavy-ish backpack) and ran the Alta Via 1 (with just a hydration vest) in these shoes (different pairs since this was in different years) and found them to be perfect for both. Had a decent amount of rain and lots of mud on both, and the shoes kept me stable and moving quickly. I haven’t sized up but as I move toward running (hopefully) 100k races, I might have to since I assume my feet will swell after the 50k or so mark. I’ve completely switched to trail runners for both hiking and backpacking and find the only drawback is that I have to buy shoes more often. But if you can afford that, the comfort is worth it!
I’ve found the grip on Salomon Speedcross to be excellent. I also prefer the non-GTX version since it dries much more quickly.
Yeah, I run, hike, and backpack in these shoes (non-GTX version) and haven’t had any issues. The lugs do wear off eventually but I think I got close to 1000 miles from each pair before they did.
Recommendations for best shoes for traction on snow and ice? I did my first winter mountain run today in Salomon Speedcross 6 (my workhorse shoe) and definitely had to take it slow with the snow/ice. Parts of the trail were pure ice, while others were melting snow, so ideally I’d like a shoe that’s good on both. (My winter trail running experience is limited since in the past, I’ve switched to hiking, snowshoeing, and running on treadmill or at lower elevations once the snow hit. But I’m taking my training more seriously now and even signed up for a winter ultra next month… I do love my micro spikes for hiking but it seems like they would be uncomfortable for 50k race, no? Plus I don’t want to take them off/put them back on when I hit dirt at lower elevations.)
Thanks! I’ve tried a variety of shoes and keep coming back to the Speedcross, so I’ll check out the other Salomon options.
I have ▶️ Hoka Tecton X2 - Trail speed ▶️ Salomon Speedcross 6 Goretex - wet days trails ▶️ Salomon Speedcross 6 - Dry days ▶️ Asics Novablast - Track work ▶️ Asics Nimbus 25 - All road runs other than races ▶️ Nike Vaporfly 2 - Race day only (roads) ▶️ Adizero Pro 4 - New race day shoes (roads) I know I have too many but I really value the grip on the trails and how the road shoes work for me.
Salomon Speedcross sounds like what you want. Although they will wear out quicker on pavement.
I have the Speedcross 5's and I swear they're the best shoes I've ever worn. I also have Oboz boots, which I do like, but those feel heavy to me now. I don't see myself buying another brand for some time. I'd estimate I have 500+ miles on the Speedcross 5's. Before these I had the Alphacross and another cheaper model they no longer make. Both were real decent, but the Speedcross are higher quality, and more durable. I bought the 6's for my GF and her feet are in pretty bad shape physically, but she agrees with me and also loves them.
Salomon Speedcross 5 or 6. Haven't even tried another shoe in years. Had alphacross before that. So for about the last 5 years, only salomon.
Definitely for a reason. Hundreds of miles on mine with no complaints. Bout to take em to Switzerland.
FYI: I’m a very wide boy, but the Salomon Speedcross and Genesis both fit very comfortably. None of their other shoes do, but those are both great shoes you might want to try. Hoka also has nice wide options across their lineup. If it‘s grip you want, I find the Speedgoat is second only to VJ Shoes - but VJ run narrow.
Wide boi here - oddly enough the Salomon Speedcross 6 works really really well for me, and not even in the wide size that they do make - just half a size up. Something about the upper design is extremely accommodating. No other Salomon fits me. Maybe worth a try.
I have a pair of Salomon speedcross 6 too. Probably them too for the real easy hikes and go from there.
I went to REI thinking by I’d get Altras based on how much backpackers love them. Most definitely not for me! I *love love love* the Salomon Speed Cross 6es I ended up with.
Trail runners! Salomon Speed Cross 6. Unbelievably great.
I would buy new just for an excuse to get a pair of the Salomon Speed Cross trail runners. They are the BEST hiking shoes I’ve ever had.
Not sure how speed cross compares to those other options. I have Salomon boots that I love, but switched my lows from La Sportiva (that were never quite right) to speed cross. Never looking back!
Right out of the box. And it’s my lucky day! Just found a barely worn pair at REI for half price.
Those are great shoes and a typical price. I think you’re going to be happy with them!!
Honestly, weird opinion but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with going into it with some old or normal running shoes you have. For your first time anyway. Just go for it, see what it’s like, you’ll figure out what you need after awhile if you keep doing it. The first one I did I used my normal running shoes but it was at Lake Castiac, and was a sprint. My first super I did I had Salomon speed cross 6’s and loved them, but kind of learned at that one I should bring a damn hydration pack lmao, but it was more because it was at Cincinnati. I just did the trifecta weekend at Attica and dead ass forgot my hydration pack for day 2 but I was already kind of planning on not using it for those anyway. (I think I would have fucking died if I didn’t have it for the beast the day before though) I feel overpowered when I do like a mini local fun run that’s a mud run and I can just run the hell up or down the slippery hills when everyone is sliding around like crazy because of those shoes lmao
