I have the same problems..very wide midfoot.  Tried altras and I split them open within a months.  Live in new Zealand and our bush is very unforgivibng..wet rocks and logs.   I tried a pair of Saucony excursion TR17 and they have been great and feels secure and hasn't split.  But....and a big one .I slip and slide all over the place and I have no trust and I'm left behind my friends cause I can't Keep up as I slip.  Note here in NZ we dont get every shoe type and model.

Saucony bud, have had their gortex and breathable versions of I’m pretty sure they are called Excursions. Both great value for the money.

I personally love Saucony Excursions. For the money ($75) they are a great shoe, breathable and tough.

Do you have Saucony available in your area? This summer, I bought their entry level/cheapest trail runner because I wanted to give trail runners a try for hiking. I got the Excursion TR17 on sale from a big box Canadian store. It is amazing. It's my first time buying wide runners (i usually just size up and deal with the additional length) and it was amazing. My wide feet is well accomodated by the shoe. I don't get the feeling that my foot is "spilling over" the soles. Durabillity is decent. I've noticed the soles wearing out but I did venture out to higher, rockier trails this summer. The uppers are holding out well. I slid down scree a couple of times and there's still no fraying on the mesh upper. The only downside is pretty minor and easily addressed: the laces come undone really quickly even if you try different lacing methods.

Saucony Tr excursions, super light, super comfy, and you rammed down with some good waterproofer you can’t go wrong.

Salomon Gore Tex sneakers. My second choice are Saucony Gore Tex sneakers.
