"the wide toe box concept was a life altering discovery for me. ... Topo makes durable shoes with wide toe box"

"I have wide feet and they are fantastic. ... roomy toe box."

"It’s really great as the toe box is wide anyway but then you can get a better fit for the heel/body of the foot"

"much more durable"

"I do wear the trail runner (Pursuit) as an everyday shoe and it has held up really well even on concrete."

"they seem better quality and last longer."

"low drop with a wide toe box ... Altras and Topos have less to zero drop and they don’t have this occur for me."

"I like how they have different mm drops."

"Topo makes durable shoes with wide toe box that are not all zero drop."

"a bit more supportive ... Turns out padding and isolation from scorching hot jagged/sloped black basalt surfaces is important."

"I definitely rolled my ankles more in Speedgoats than I do in my topos or lone peaks. ... Just having a wider base helps a lot for the stability, for me at least"

"Topo was much better in the midfoot."

"The Topos give me the extra padding, more inline with an Altra Timp, but don't squish my mid foot like the Timps do."

"I have less fatigue in my feet with the Topos."

"They’re just as comfortable."

"For flat feet, stay away from Topo - they have super high arch support that caused me major issues even with just low arches."

"I tried Topos but found there to be too much support and got blisters under my arch."

"hate that the highest drop shoe they offer is 5mm. Not everyone is into the low drop trend. ... So basically for me it’s either a shoe that’s not quite wide enough but has a higher drop or a shoe that is wide enough but lower drop."

Topo runventure 3 - amazing for dirt and forest trail / fireroads, not good on mountain-rocky terrain

I did it in Altra Superiors, and have done hundreds more miles in King Mountains. Then I got mad at Altra for discontinuing those, and I switched to Topo Runventures. You'll be fine

Topos are reasonably normal (whatever that means), widely available, wide toe Bos, and low drop shoes.

Try Topos in the wide width. I speak from experience. My feet are EEE width.

Durability aside, try on both shoes. If you’re not thru-hiking then durability doesn’t matter much. Yeah, it’ll be annoying if they give out sooner than you expected, but the comfort can be worth the money. For me, Altras are the most comfortable by far. I wanted to switch to Topos due to the rave reviews and the vibram sole, but I had to immediately return them due to their pronounced arch support. My feet hated them and my altra trail runners and road shoes are the most comfortable shoes for my feet I’ve ever worn. I was late to the game so I’m sure I missed out on the glory days, but until another company comes out with a wide toe box and no arch support trail runner it’s altra all the way for me.

It’s all about the fit. I tried to move over to Topo but the arch support was too pronounced and was uncomfortable on my feet. Altras fit like a glove. It’s unfortunate that they’re not as durable but comfort is king.

Topo. I have wide feet and they're the only trail runners that fit me

Like u/Responsible-Walrus-5 said, fit is the most important thing. That being said I used to hike with Altras, but on my first thru hike a friend and I both bought pairs of Altra LPs in a trail town, and in about a week both our pairs of shoes fell apart, and we weren't even hiking long days or in crazy terrain. Earlier models were much better (which is why I used them before that). If both fit you well, go with Topo, I switched to them a couple years ago and I've been very happy, but ultimately if they don't fit your foot, you're better off with Altras.

I guess I'm glad to hear they at least listened to the feedback, but personally I'm not giving them another chance... at least not as long as Topo is making decent shoes!

That's exactly why I switched, I had a couple pairs of LPs fall apart on me way too early (one pair in less than two weeks on a thru hike). Also Topo has a fit more like the old LPs (wide in the toe box, but not in the heel). I'm glad to hear Topo is doing well... as long as they don't get bought by a corporation and ruined.

I highly recommend Topo Trail runners. I have wide feet and they are fantastic. I use them for all of my running now, road and trail. My current pair is the Runventure 4's and theyre fantastic. vibram sole and lightweight. roomy toe box. They are definitely worth checking out

r/vivobarefootLong term Vivo wearer here (8 years+) and i think I'm done. Where do i go from here?

This is everything. More money for an inferior product. I’m also a long term Vivo wearer (15+ years) and unfortunately nothing else works as well. I’ve also found the quality of the Vivo stuff was never worth the asking price, but the sole feels so good and I can wear them everywhere. I only ever buy them on sale. I’m not fashionable enough to care about last years colours. But I do like how they feel. FYI, I only wear them as street shoes. I run trails in Bedrock classics. I used to like the Topo trail runners but they got bulked up and started to cater to the mainstream crowd (lots of bells and whistles and cushioning).

I never looked up the science so please take with a grain of salt- my dad always told me for hiking boots and shoes, a pound on the feet is worth ten on your back. I noticed signifigant change when I started hiking in a sturdy trail runner instead of a boot. I am in the middle of el primitivo and I have been very happy with my Topo runners!
