I would 1000% pay $60 for this car seat: cosco scenera. Light to Cary around and kid sleeps well in it.  Do you need it? Who knows. But it's so worth it. The Cosco seat also fits perfectly on the seat of our Ergobaby Metro+, then secures with a luggage strap. Car seat goes on the plane seat, stroller goes in the overhead

Slightly confusing brand: Cosco not Costco. But it’s the Cosco Scenera Next: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Cosco-Kids-Scenera-NEXT-Convertible-Car-Seat-Otto-Infant-Toddler-Unisex/41126745 And then any luggage strap will do: Car Seat Belt Strap to Suitcase,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SMQ2QH6?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

For the 6 month old you're going to need an infant seat; depending on sizing it might be worth purchasing something relatively inexpensive that you could snap onto a stroller. Both Uber and Lyft have options to request cars with a car seat -- however, they typically only have one. For Uber if you request a car with a seat they will send a convertable seat that can be used with an infant or toddler, but you have to schedule the car at least an hour in advance. For Lyft, you can request a car with a car seat and wait like a normal ride -- depending on availability, it may arrive within anything from 15 minutes to half an hour. HOWEVER, the seats that come in Lyfts are often booster-style seats that are suitable for children 1+ years old. Your best bet is likely going to be a combination of Subway and/or Bus if you don't want to carry around extra gear for most trips, but these options are available for rideshares! If you decide to purchase a seat stateside as a backup, you can order the [Cosco Scenera](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Cosco-Kids-Scenera-Next-DLX-Convertible-Car-Seat-Moon-Mist/41126745?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222222000000000&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=e&wl1=o&wl2=c&wl3=10352200394&wl4=pla-1103028060075&wl5=&wl6=&wl7=&wl10=Walmart&wl11=Online&wl12=41126745_0&wl14=cosco%20scenera&veh=sem&msclkid=9c870141bd5016821ae2669d76767708&gclid=9c870141bd5016821ae2669d76767708&gclsrc=3p.ds) for around $60. It's relatively inexpensive, very light, and what a lot of city parents with small kids use.

Not sure how old your kids are but up until recently (my dtr is 5) we always had her fly in the plane in her car seat. Helped keep her contained and she was used to being in it so no problems there. The cosco brand sold at Walmart has really light weight affordable car seats that we would use for travel.

My parents bought their own car seat for my daughter, their first grandchild. She uses it probably 1-2 times a month. Now they have 2 more grandchildren so it will get lots of use over the years. My mom splurged and got the evenflo 360 since she didn’t wanna wrangle the kids in there sideways with her bad back. My in-laws don’t have a car seat so we lend them our Cosco scenara that we bought for air travel. They don’t watch my daughter as much, and when they do, we usually drive her to their house.

We use this one for airplane travel and would recommend. The Cosco Scenera is also often recommended - they’re essentially identical but the Maxi Cosco one has more padding ETA that we use a luggage strap to attach the car seat to our travel stroller instead of purchasing a dolly and would recommend this if it will work with your stroller. We gate check the stroller

Everything about rental car seats from OrneryPathos I would echo- you can't guarantee or assume it's safe so basically don't do it. Typically when you travel abroad your seat isn't able to be used if you move there, but everyone turns a blind eye to foreign seats as long as you are otherwise following the local laws (age requirements, rear facing requirements, booster requirements, etc). In this case, traveling alone I'd go with a very light carseat like a Cosco Scenera Next in a nice travel backpack and then use pouches or an insert to also use that same bag as your diaper bag.

We had this exact set up with the same car seat and stroller. We also bought a padded car seat bag from Amazon that fit the scenera that we used for checking the car seat. The bag is backpack style too which is super convenient.

Most convertible seats are pretty heavy. We have the Cosco scenera for travel and it’s definitely lightweight and easy to install. You do have to make sure that it’s level after tightening the straps every time, which would be annoying every day, but totally fine for travel.

Take the seat. We prefer a lightweight seat that’s different than our everyday seat, but any FAA approved is fine. The lightest we’ve found is the cosco scenera next, but it’s not my favorite due to where the belt buckle on a plane seat is, but I don’t know of a better suggestion. Safe in the seat on insta/fb/they have a blog has great suggestions. I strap my kid in, give them a toy and enjoy my flight. No fighting over getting up when the seatbelt sign is on or them sliding out of their seat, etc. I don’t have to worry about my seat being damaged by checking it. It’s safest for my child and everyone around us in the event of turbulence. Usually, my kids fall asleep bc they’re comfy and I get a little vacation on the flight, whereas when they aren’t in a seat I’m sweaty and stressed from wrangling them the whole time.
