I'm in the same boat. I don't like the contrast ratio, image quality, and low nits on my LG either.

The 40" Dell is 2160p which gives more vertical pixels and is beneficial for work situations, more rows in Excel, etc. Higher pixel density, but at 40" it equals out. You can either read specs, or use Pythagoras theorum to calculate how many pixels per inch (PPI) a monitor provides. Instead of manually doing that, you just ask AI, and it'll do it for you; leading to result: A 39.7" monitor with a 5120 x 2160 resolution has a pixel density of approximately 140 PPI. Your existing HP monitors don't state PPI, but you can directly convert the pixel density specs, so 0.23x0.23mm is roughly 110 PPI. This eliminates your wife's issue that it's "too big" at 2x 27" as 24" at 1440p is only 122ppi. For gaming you can indeed always use monitor in a different way. Most ultrawides for example allow you to connect multiple inputs and dedicate part of the screen as a smaller monitor. This can usually be controlled via buttons on the monitor, or via software. Using a different resolution and lower refresh rate is always an option as well, especially if your GPU isn't sufficient for maximum specs. Just have to strike right balance between spending lot of money on a new monitor vs buying better videocard. Now for your panel question, VA panels should be avoided at all cost if you ask me. Only very specific scenarios would be suitable, but the moment you say "work" and will use the monitor for long periods continuously staring mainly at static text there's no question. OLED is amazing on dark levels, so if you enjoy dark-mode interface it is superior to everything, Samsung QLED is different tech, so view them in person to decide for yourself. The burn-in risk can be mitigated with settings like a 1min screensaver. As long as screen content doesn't stay "static" the risk factor is greatly removed, and new generation panels have also improved on this. That's why you should take the new LG 45" 5K2K into account as well. Just don't fear banding and run a few pixel cleans as you need to "work in" those OLED panels. Don't buy at MSRP though, it's already on sale. Personally with the occasional 10h+ light themed coding sessions, I'm looking at the LG 40WP95C-W, and plan to create my own mini holodeck with three of them. Just need price to drop to $1k, and came close at $1200 earlier this year, but waiting till BlackFriday 🤗

The problem with ultrawides are that they are mostly dual QHD monitors. That’s like having 2 1440p monitors which resolution is too low for Macs. I’ve had 1440p monitors and I can’t stand the pixelation of the screen. Macs don’t do sub pixel rendering so you’re stuck with the Macs approach for 2x resolution for its hi-res mode. I’ve been an avid enthusiast of LG UltraWide monitors for over a decade. Since my first LG 34UM95‑P, I’ve upgraded through four different UltraWide displays, and I’m currently working on an LG 40WP95C‑W. Although I’m not a gamer, I rely heavily on the extra horizontal space to streamline my daily programming and multi-tasking workflows. I think the sweet spot for the GX9 is the 800R curvature. While some users worry that an 800R curve is too aggressive, from my experience, I believe that on a 45-inch panel, only an 800R curvature ensures every part of the display sits comfortably within my field of view—no head turns or large eye movements required to see every window at a glance.

For gaming the 45 OLED 5k2k might win, but it still has a lower PPI than the 40 with the same resolution. OLED is a negative for programming as well. The 57 Samsung is a monster and their QC is substandard at best. LG also makes a 40 5k2k, but it's only 72hz. That what I use and it's great. No issues and I'm in text all day like a programmer.

I have the same monitor and same screen sharing challenge. I picked up a small portable monitor that I have below the 40". It's connected Daisy chain from the 40 and gets power from the same cable. Since it's 1920x1080 I share this entire screen. When not screen sharing the portable is used exclusively for Teams allowing me not to waste space on the UW for Teams.

LG 40 5k2k m3 Mac pro. Full resolution. Works great. This monitor is designed for Mac use. It's geared towards content creators.

I don't think OLED makes sense for your use case so I'll recommend either the Dell or LG 40 5k2k. I have the LG and it works great on my m3 pro. I run the full res with no scaling. Similar use case as you.

recently bought lg-40wp95c and its wicked perfect without being too big.. regarding its brightness... i found out its not only that but also the contrast setting if you increase that the screen becomes a lot brighter.

using the lg 40" 5k2k for 2 years for work stuff and its great, good size without being too big. i have 32" in portrait mode also.

There already is one 5k2k monitor out with just a slight curve -> LG 40WP95X I have this monitor and it‘s great! Only downside is it‘s only 72hz and no Oled. Will switch to the bendable GX990A model once released

Outlook Inbox links oben, Outlook Kalender links unten, Browser/IDE Mitte, Teams rechts oben, Discord rechts unten. Ganzen Bildschirm teilen auch, außer bei sehr wenigen Programmen, die nicht gut mitskalieren wie TOAD. Gaming übrigens auch, meine 3080 stemmt 5K2K mit 72 Hz ohne weiteres etwa in Forza Horizon 5. Nur Cyberpunk 2077 offensichtlich nicht. Ich würde sogar auf die neuen 45” gehen wenn da nicht die Pixeldichte geringer wäre.

I’ve recently received the dell u3525w but the ppi was too low for me, so I’m going to return it. Ordered the 40WP95CP-W last night, which is similar to the dell you’ve mentioned, but less pricy (and some missing features like IPS black). It seems to be the sweet spot. I’m using it 100% for work. It has a light curve, power delivery, 5k2k display and high ppi of 140 I believe.

Do you have plans on upgrading from the M2 to M4 chips? If so, get the Dell U4025QW. I have the LG 40PW95C and it’s absolutely amazing for productivity, but it is pretty much useless with a M4 MacBook without using BetterDisplay.
