"Haven’t you he’d the c3 since. ... Granted I live in a small apt in NYC ... Even if the c3 is much better at cleaning, it doesn’t mean much to me if it means I’ll only vacuum every other week vs once a day."

"I’ve tried my families Miele canister when I lived with them and never got the hang of it. ... How do you manage the canister? Even when I tried it in a bigger place I still carried the canister around which was super annoying just to not trip on it ... The space is small enough that it has dead ends without enough space to turn around by pulling the canister. Is there a way that same concept can still be applied? We’re talking bedsides with only 1.5’ space, 4’ hallway with a litter box at the end, 5’ kitchen width with dead end."

Both the D4 and E3 will last decades. Amortized out it’s probably a wash buying less bags but probably better to go with the larger D4 for convenience.

There are a handful of vacuums that can clean the Mohawk SmartStrand Silk “soft carpet.” 1. Kirby (with the optional delicate brush roll I presume) 2. Miele C3 with the SEB228; used to be a SoftCarpet model but it wasn’t much different from the other C3s. 3. Sebo vacs with the ET-1 nozzle (adjustable suction, manual carpet height adjustment) with the delicate brush roll 4. Kenmore Elite canister 5. Rainbow SRX with v1.0 and v1.2 power nozzle + soft brush roll 6. SoniClean - I think those are the vacs that have a vibrating pad instead of a revolving brush roll There are more, but these are a few of them. Adjustable carpet height paired with adjustable suction are must have features for those types of carpet, but I like them for any type of carpet.

For carpet, it’s hands down the best. It has the most of everything a vac needs to super clean carpet. Airflow, agitation, etc. 132 - 150 CFM is monstrously high, and that is measured where the carpet intake is. On other vacs, the airflow is about 1/4 - 1/3 of that at the carpet intake, and they don’t agitate as well. I keep a Kirby around for deep-cleaning carpet but daily a Miele C3. The Miele C3 with the SEB 228 nozzle is impressive on carpet, but it still isn’t like monstrously powerful.

I see the appeal of a stick. I have a V15. It’s about 3 yrs old. It’s primary role is for in-between cleans, small messes. Touch-ups. But, if I am going to vac our main living areas or the entire house, I can get the job done a lot faster with my Miele. If I am going to deep clean the carpet, I don’t pre-vac with my V15. I use my Kirby. If I am going to detail a vehicle, Miele. If I am going to use attachments for deep cleaning, Miele.

I am much more of an upright kind of guy simply because I get frustrated - very quickly - with the extra effort inherently involved with canisters, but I still use a Miele C3 as a daily machine specifically because it is the vacuum that requires the littlest effort to use and frustrates me the least. The C3’s electric hose is exclusive to it, and it doesn’t get tangled. It might be worth looking into if you value ease of use. They are a pleasure to use. I bought one for its foot levers (no bending over required), sealedH13 HEPA, power nozzle, and its quietness. They weren’t as expensive back then, but I’d buy it again. They aren’t perfect but I don’t know if a vacuum that is perfect. Aerus canisters are overall good machines but the entry level and mid level models are not sealed systems, and I don’t think the entry-level version has an exhaust filter at all. I could be wrong. I also like having adjustable carpet height, and foot levers. Some Miele C3 models had issues with an electrical connector but it was a manufacturing error. I think the Sebo canisters are capable of last even longer than the C3, but again like foot levers and value ease-of-use.

Well I’m only basing the 110” on my Miele because out of all the vacs I’ve used to detail cars with, it has been the best. It’s listed to have 111” of waterlift, and it has a strong pull when detailing vehicles with it. I’ve used machines that I thought had higher cfm, but didn’t perform as well. Maybe my assumption isn’t correct. Maybe they had less CFM at the hose than the Miele but I would think it would be higher. The Kirby Avalir, for example, I would think has more airflow at the hose than my Miele but it really doesn’t do very well in detail jobs. I have only found 2 vacuums with higher suction figures than my Miele C3 > the Aerus Guardian Platinum and the blue Perfect C105. They weren’t significantly higher in suction but it’s something I noted.

Sebo has incredible customer service in my experience. Lenny, the corporate technician, had me ship him my Sebo X4 directly to him. He covered shipping, parts, and labor - even knowing I bought it on eBay. Granted the eBay seller was a retiring Sebo dealer who had one X4 left, in stock. Most companies would automatically disqualify it because it wasn’t purchased directly from the dealer itself. I told Lenny this, and he said as long as I could verify it was coming from the original dealer who purchased it from Sebo, that he would honor the warranty. He fixed it. $0 out of pocket except for the time, energy, gas, masking tape, etc I used packing it and taking it to the UPS store. Lenny had sent me a shipping label. I also appreciated that when I called, I spoke to someone I could hear (good reception), understand (linguistically), and made the experience very personal - not the typical over seas call center experience common in today’s world. It was impressive. I still prefer my Miele C3 as far as canister vacs are concerned, but Miele’s customer service line is hit and miss.

How often do you vacuum? We have a lot of carpet and hard flooring, a 2-story home, lots of pets, and people. I’ve tried the Sebo canisters in my home, and several Miele models. The Miele C3 won my over. It’s comfortable to use, cleaned better, and has phenomenal filtration - on par with high-end air purifiers.

I've owned/ own both and prefer the Miele **C3** for a few reasons. It has more airflow, more suction, superior filtration (H13+) available, an aggressive beater bar (Sebo's is too gentle imo), and I find it significantly easier to use. It's also a very serviceable vac, very simple to take apart for tune-ups, repair, deep-cleaning, etc. I found the Miele C3 to be a lot easier to disassemble than my E3 and D4. I can do it in 2 minutes flat with a drill.

I am not fond of the Miele C1, and I wasn’t in love with my E3 or D4. I love my C3, though. I would like to try the K3. I thought it wasn’t as powerful as the E and D series units, but I guess I was wrong. This Sebo lady on YouTube claimed they all have the same level of airflow and suction.

S8s are super, super easy to repair. What broke? The C3 is still available in some stores, even from Miele directly. I tried many other vacs and couldn’t find one that had the power and comfort and the S8/C3. The Guard L1 models are slightly less powerful, but still very good vacs.

Alternatively, the Sebo E3 is probably the closest thing. It doesn’t have as much power, and it isn’t available with HEPA-13 (or HEPA at all), nor is it as comfortable to use but they are very durable and well-engineered. People that don’t like them tend to not like them because of the hose, which is also a common complaint with the D4. Overall, the C3 is significantly more comfortable to use, more power, superior filtration, more aggressive carpet performance, more suitable for residential applications. If it is the motor in your S8 that died, the motors can be replaced in 2 - 5 mins. Very easy, not expensive. $130!USD is what I see that listed at.

It’s also important to differentiate between types of HEPA. Miele’s HEPA is H13+ and almost H14. It’s very rare to find H13 in vacuum’s, as most are H11 if they even have HEPA. Rainbows also utilize H13, but aren’t the easiest bags to use if used frequently. I would definitely get a Miele Complete C3, Complete C3, Guard M1 or L1 AllFloors, one with the Parquet Twister floor-head. It significantly better than the AllTeq and FiberTeq heads, and you can get an extra-wide version of it. For rug(s), the TurboTeQ head is sufficient for low pile area rugs.

grandcherokee2 • about 2 months ago

Miele Complete C3 canister, or a Sebo canister. Both are extremely well engineered. Sebo wands are more durable, but the Miele overlap has the most power, best filtration, and are known for lasting for 10 - 20 years (depending on use rate). It’s also a lot easier to use overall, lots of little things that add up. Sebo’s are commercial grade, more utilitarian, simpler, designed to be used for extended periods every day and still hold up for many, many years; but they come with some traded off drawbacks. I think the Miele canisters are the best choice for residential level cleaning (maybe twice per week for 20-30 mins each time), while the Sebo models are better for commercial level use - using it every day for 45 mins - 1+ hr). Canisters tend to be better for use floors, but both Sebo and Miele sell canisters that are exceptionally effective on carpet - rivaling premium uprights. Get the upgraded hardfloor tool with either brand you go with Sebo Premium Parquet or the Miele Parquet Twister floor head. The Miele version is a lot easier to whip around, but both are premium.

The Dyson V8s have awful suction. I suppose they’re okay for hard floor quick pickups but for a mains vacuum, you need a corded canister with a premium hard floor tool. I think Sebo is one of the few companies in the EU that produce power nozzle equipped canister/cylinder vacs. If you can get a Miele canister with the SEB228 power nozzle, and the premium parquet twister hard floor tool, that’s my favorite setup. I used to be an upright vac guy but I’ve been converted. It really isn’t good. They’re also a lot cheaper in the EU than they are in the U.S., but even at US pricing, I find them worth it.

We have two Miele cylinder vacuum cleaners, one upstairs one down. The upstairs one was bought new in 1992 and still works faultlessly. The second is a much older design obtained for £0.00 from Freecycle (when that was a thing) about 15 years ago. Both perform powerfully and faultlessly*. The older one has a powered sweeper head which works well on both carpet and hard floors. I got it from a posh lady who said she was embarrassed when friends came around for coffee and saw her “ancient” vacuum cleaner. She had replaced it with a new Miele to save her blushes. Both are 1500W and extremely powerful. *The cable retractor on the upstairs one made a squeaking noise when operated. My first wife told me to fix it so I sprayed it with some WD40. It stopped the squeak but the retraction process has since needed human intervention. 🙄 -oo-

Sebo’s are originally made for commercial usage they can be used for household cleaning. Miele’s are made for household in Europe they are the Mercedes of vacuums. They have features to make them more user friendly my C3 has built in tools under a special hood, touch powersettings with symbol, tools are more refined and the machine it self is nicer to look at in case you can’t store them in a cupboard or closet! Thats why I prefer Miele when using it in my home it doesnt feel like the vacuum operates me but I am in control of vacuuming with it following behind me. And in case I have sudden visitors at the front door i’m not like get that clunky ugly machine out of the room😂😅 so it’s more user prefference at the end of the day they both get the jobs done for years to come

I don’t even understand how there are still BIFL vacuum threads when Miele exists. You do any searching at all and Miele is the answer. I got my Miele in 2016 and it’s pretty much exactly the same now as the day I bought it. I replaced one of the attachments, because I wanted to level up from nylon brushes to horsehair brushes. Otherwise it’s perfect. Hot tip, I bought mine at the very end of the year after Christmas and they were having a big sale. It was a long time ago so idk if they still have end of the year sales, but worth looking out for one. I also at some point bought the extra long skinny nozzle attachment which has been handy.

I have the model that can use a hepa filter and has the electric head, not just the non-powered brush head. Without the electric head, I don’t think it would be very effective on carpets. The non powered brush is great for my wood floors. The electric head has no issues on carpet and I have long hair (I try to contain my shedding though, if I have a loose hair, I try to put it in the trash). The electric head has 5 settings of how high off the floor you want the brush, and the canister has multiple levels of suction, so you can do pretty much any surface from carpet all the way down to curtains and upholstery. Honestly I remember growing up with my parents’ mediocre vacuums and having hair get wrapped around the roller brush all the time and having be a huge pain in the ass to clean? The Miele seems to have no issues at all. I can’t even really remember ever having to unstick long hair, though maybe I have once or twice. Their instructional videos really emphasize going slow enough to rely on the suction to loosen and pick stuff up. And it is really good. However, I don’t have pets so can’t speak to how that changes things. When I bought it, I remember them saying it was designed to last for a minimum of one (or two?)hour of vacuuming per week for 20 years. Also, it has a pedal you tap with your foot to automatically retract the cord and it is an amazing feature. I just remember how much I loathed to wrap the stupid long ass cord of my parents vacuum. The cord retractor is dope af, makes it all feel like much less of a chore. ETA: Mine is also the mid-range, and when I bought it, it was advertised as being a little more compact than their full sized ones, which it is and I love it. Perfect for an apartment or if you don’t have enough storage space, and it’s easy to move around.

I used my Black & Decker PowerSeries+ cordless stick vac to clean up some dust and dirt leftover from having a new air conditioner installed; I probably shouldn’t have, but I wasn’t going to ruin my 4 month old Miele C3 to do it either! Decided to give it a proper wash, as this would the first time I’ve ever done it for this particular vacuum; a cup of laundry detergent in a laundry trough of warm water, leave to soak for a little bit, rinse off then dry outside for at least a few days (I have a fishnet-style grocery bag I put them in to hang them on the clothesline) It took me back to owning a corded bagless upright, where I was constantly doing this just to maintain any sort of suction! Made me remember the biggest reason why I bought a bagged vacuum in the first place.

The old ones yes do last more than a couple years. However, New sharks are an absolute joke. Disposable. A well built machine likely won’t have any issues in the first place, but if they do it’s easily repaired. For example I’ve had my Miele C3 for almost a decade and have had 0 issues with it. It will likely last another decade or longer before I give it to my kids or family. What’s your budget and flooring like?

If you like an upright, stick with an upright. It’s really personal preference - there is no right or wrong answer. But IMO canisters do have some pros that uprights don’t. Canister pros: 1) Better suited for 50:50 or mostly hard flooring. Canisters come with a “straight suction” floor attachment that is ideal for hard flooring (no brushroll) which is what you want. A dedicated tool for the flooring you’re trying to clean. Most uprights don’t have this (sans for a Sebo Felix) uprights make use of an electric powerhead on hard flooring which isn’t ideal - even if it’s shut off and on the hard floor setting. 2) Much lighter in the hand: the motor glides along behind you, so you’re only really holding ~3-5lbs in your hand. Lighter than most cordless sticks! 3) Above floor cleaning: drapes, ceilings, trim, cabinets etc. Many uprights have hoses etc. but it’s just not the same 4) IMO more maneuverable under furniture, in tight corners and in stairs Cons: 1) Learning curve: to some people, it can feel like it’s a “ball and chain” and they trip over the hose and motor. IMO this can be mitigated if you learn to vacuum *in* to rooms rather than backing out of them like a lot of us do with uprights Personally I was an upright fan until I got my Miele C3, it took a few uses. But now I can’t go back to an upright. They feel so heavy and bulky in comparison (IMO, YMMV). Do you have a local vacuum store that sells Miele or Sebo? Stop in and take a Sebo dart, Felix, k3 or e3. Or a Miele C1 cat and dog, C3 Excellence or C3 cat and dog for a test drive to see which you prefer.

All 3 are excellent. You really can’t do wrong between the 3. Personally I’d place more weight on the price, warranty etc between the two brands. It’s splitting hairs (see what I did there?) but I’d rank them 236, et-1, 228 in the order of cleaning performance alone. Like I said, they’re all great I don’t think there is a “right” or wrong answer here. The removable brush is a huge plus for Sebo. But IMO the Miele cleans better. However the Miele’s are not user serviceable. Also know that while I think the 236 cleans the best (by a narrow margin) it does have this awkward belt placement where it leaves a path of uncleaned carpet about 3/4 off to the side. I use that as a guide on how much to overlap but some people find it annoying.

No it doesn’t. I believe the 228 is slightly narrower so it doesn’t have that design “feature”.

I have one for quick messes and love it. It’s the perfect pair to my C3 (thanks to performance reviews for the tip) I believe both those models have the powered attachment point. It’s when it’s called the S194 is when you need to do your due diligence. Worst case, as for a picture of the attachment point. It’s easy to see if it’s electrified or not.

Miele and sebo are both great and pretty similar, with differences in the power nozzles. Miele is not as user serviceable whereas the sebos et-1 brush is removable. The electric hoses can be a point of failure and the sebo if i remember right has replaceable components on the outside where as Mieles i believe have to replace the whole hose. As for bagged vs bagless, bagless machines are a little more work for the user as you need to maintain the filters and occasionally clean out the canister but are sometimes more convenient. Bagged machines are better if you have bad dust allergies and are generally lighter, because dust is bagged, filtration tends to be better and the canister is kept clean. You still have filters to change, but miele includes the basic ones with their bags which in my opinion are good for the average user. I personally got a miele at a really good price and have really enjoyed it so far. Since you have a lot of hardwood and low pile rugs, you could go for most miele models, theres the guard series, L1, etc. A model with the parquet XL head (16 in) will give a pretty big cleaning path for hard floors!

There's not a lot that differs between models. Since you have a lot of carpet the main feature you want is an electric power nozzle. Wheather its a c1, c3, or guard model that's the main feature. When comparing models, filter by the models that come with Seb 228 or seb 236 as they are best for carpets and are height adjustable. The c1 and c3 have cat and dog powerline models, several c3 models, and the new guard L1 electro and some s1 models. All will have a 1200 watt motor. I think most of the cat and dog ones and the new guard ones come with a HEPA filter and all will also come with a suction only head that works well on bare floors and low rugs. Edit, I think the classic c1 cat and dog would meet the requirements. You can buy them online, but if theres a local vacuum store you'd probably get better warranty or more options and accessories!

They all have the same motor, the difference is mainly in the heads/attachments. If you have wall to wall carpets that are medium to high pile seb 228 and seb 236 will do really well. If you have mostly hard floors then pure suction machines can work. There newest pure suction, guard L1 all floor has a new head that can work on low pile carpets from what ive seen, but in my opinion itll be harder to push on the max setting when on carpet. If you can find a good deal on a c1/c3 you can save a little since the new generation is m1/s1/L1.

My miele c3 has ended up being my most favorite machine ever! The only real issue is finding the best model for your needs. If its low pile or berber the new guard L1 all floor can handle it with straight suction. If its a medium to higher pile the classic c1 cat and dog powerline, c3 kona/marin, or machine with seb 228 will handle carpets really well.

For all hard floors a canister vacuum with suction-only floor brushes will do great. A canister vacuum will also give you a long flexible hose that will make above the floor cleaning easier than a stick vacuum or an upright with a stretch hose. The Dyson V12 Slim and Dyson V15 are just like other cordless vacuums except they cost more for show-off features. A cordless vacuum will have less suction power, a limited run time, and a small bin. They also need constant maintenance. Dysons add particle sensors and lasers but that doesn't help the vacuum's suction power or bin size or durability. Cordless vacuums last 2-5 years. For a small room of hard floors a cordless vacuum will clean it, but when you are using the tools to clean the walls and ceilings it will be heavier and more work because you have to lift the whole vacuum the entire time. Hands down the Miele Complete C3 Allergy is better than any cordless vacuum. It has strong suction, it has great filtration, it lasts a long time, and it's very quiet too. Downsides are the included tools are small. Larger dusting brushes and other tools are available from Miele, not sure about the availability in your country. If you only have 1 small room the [Miele Classic C1 Junior PowerLine SBAF3](https://www.miele.in/domestic/vacuum-cleaners-1784.htm?mat=11694890&name=Classic_C1_Junior_PowerLine_-_SBAF3) is also capable enough to clean 1 room of hard floors and it will come with the same hose length and the same 3 tools. The C1 Junior has a smaller motor than the C3 Allergy, but it has more than enough power for your cleaning uses. I would buy the one of these Miele bagged canister vacuums. Hope that helps.

Definitely the C3 Allergy. Miele’s bagless vacuums aren’t as good as their bagged vacuums, their filters need constant cleaning.

What vacuum do you use now? There are a lot of Miele models, so I'll try to answer as best I can. For Miele in the U.K. the Cat & Dog means the vacuum usually comes with an air-powered turbo brush (for rugs), a carbon exhaust filter (for odors), and sometimes a mini turbo brush (for upholstery). The main turbo brush is good for low to medium pile rugs or minimal carpets. A turbo brush will make it easier to clean rugs than just using a combo floor brush. It isn't good for high or plush pile carpets, lots of carpets, or long hair because it has a narrow diameter brushroll that gets lots of hair wrap. This applies to other brands turbo brushes as well. I'm wary that a turbo brush will be any good on your deep pile carpet, its likely it will stall/stop spinning. Then you'll just use the standard combo brush. While I think the Miele C3 is better than the new Miele Guard L1 you may want a vacuum with a carpet powerhead and carpet height adjustment to work on your carpets. Not a lot of canister vacuums in Europe offer carpet powerheads but Sebo still does. You may want to check out the Sebo K3, Sebo E3, and Sebo Felix upright vacuums. They have electric carpet powerheads with carpet height adjustment, but you might need to swap in Sebo's green soft bristle brushroll. Hope that helps.

The Sebo K3 and Sebo E3 cost more than the Mieles because of the carpet powerhead and wiring. The Sebo K2 Turbo and Sebo E2 Turbo are the non-powered canisters closer to the price of the Mieles. I saw in your other comment you're looking at the Sebo Felix which is a great choice for an upright with a carpet powerhead and some of the U.K. models include the Premium Parquet Brush for dedicated hard floor use. You can use the carpet powerhed with the brushroll off and the height set to 1 for hard floor cleaning too. The nice thing about Sebo powerheads is the brushroll pops out without needing any tools for faster access and removing hair wrap.
