"The other head without the spinner is fucking ridiculously strong. ... I cannot vacuum a rug with it because it sucks so hard. I have to hold one side down with my foot and pull away and it's still hard haha."

"3 dog's and 3 cats with all carpet. ... that thing fuckin rips. ... it works too good and everytime I use it I have to take scissors and cut the hair that's caught around the head in the brushes but it's not the vacuums fault I have a fucking hobby farm on a carpet sooo."

"Miele! We have 9 cats and a dog. ... It cleans up pet messes"

"The C3 has a complete sealed system which is better than C1 if you have issues with allergies."

"I actually don’t see bagless as a positive. They objectively release a lot of contaminant’s into the air when emptying. ... With a good bagged vacuum, the bag helps filter the air and the bags last a long time."

"I'll be damned if I'm going to drag that thing up and down three floors regularly."

"I’ve tried my families Miele canister when I lived with them and never got the hang of it. ... How do you manage the canister? We have a small space and based on my experience it seems like I would trip over it. Even when I tried it in a bigger place I still carried the canister around which was super annoying just to not trip on it ... The space is small enough that it has dead ends without enough space to turn around by pulling the canister. Is there a way that same concept can still be applied? We’re talking bedsides with only 1.5’ space, 4’ hallway with a litter box at the end, 5’ kitchen width with dead end."

"Scratched the hardwood floors ... there is a sort of hook on the back which hits the floor when you're going under tables/beds"

"My Miele has an infuriatingly short power cord, and my house is quite small"

"The cord is quite long though."

The assertion that they "got rid of the pre motor filter" is just...wrong though? The S1 and M1 use the same fabric type pre motor filter that has been used in the C series. The L1 has admittedly got rid of that in favour of a mesh, but it's wrong to say they've all lost the pre motor filter. Also it's only the L1 that has the display. If you don't like/want/need it, the M1 and S1 are available. The new bags fix the issue that was there with the C series of people not seating the bag properly when closing the bag compartment. And really why would anyone want to be using generic third party bags anyway when you've invested in a premium vacuum? I bought some once for my C2 compact and they were crap compared to the official Miele bags. Not saying that Miele are beyond criticism at all, but I think it's fair to actually be reasonable with ones criticism. This having been said when my C2 dies I'll be getting a Sebo because I would like a powered head.

The S1 and M1 have not moved to the mesh though. They are using the same/similar fabric that has been used on the C series for years.

The general consensus here is that stick vacs as a whole aren't good. I think I'm inclined to agree when it comes to the absolute budget end of the spectrum like this. They won't perform and they won't last long. However I do genuinely think that stick vacs serve a purpose so I'm not against them like a lot of others on this sub. I have one that I use for quick pick ups and a quick run around every few days just to keep things looking ok. It is hugely convenient and my most used vacuum. But I have a corded canister and upright vacuum for deeper cleans every week or so. If I need to do a "proper" clean, the stick vac isn't coming out. You just have to go into the purchase knowing that even if you spend a little more, they're not going to be the longest lasting thing and won't perform as well as a half decent mains powered vacuum with a powered head, and in some cases they won't even perform as well as a canister with a turbo brush. Do you need the convenience of a stick vac? And what flooring do you mainly have?

Whilst it's less convenient, I find a canister vacuum the lightest to work with, although you do need to manoeuvre the machine around on the floor. With a canister you're barely holding any weight in your hand, it's all down on the floor. For above floor cleaning it's the best experience, and then for carpets and floors it's also easy as you're only pushing around the wand and floor head. In terms of lightweight sticks I don't know too many really I'm afraid. Sebo balance and Dyson V12 are both light. I can't speak to the longevity and quality of either though. I owned a V12 for a bit and it was light to use but I returned it as couldn't justify the expense for my daily runaround vacuum. I own a Levoit LVAC 200 which is...fine...but does a poor job on carpets, it will really only skim the surface. I replaced that with a Tineco Pure One Station Five. It's a bit heavier but it does the job and I picked it up new in box on eBay for about £125. The self empty station really helps and it does an ok job just keeping things looking clean. However I'm not sure how long it'll last as some of the joints are already getting creaky and loose.

If you get one with a turbo brush it'll be ok, not fantastic but it'll be better than just a straight suction head. I use a Miele canister with a turbo brush and it doesn't dig as deep as my upright with a powered head but it's fine. If you have low pile carpets then it should be ok. For me the convenience of a canister is the versatility of using it for above floor cleaning of upholstery, dusting etc...then also hard floors and area rugs/carpets. There are very limited canister vacuums available in the UK with powered heads, basically I think it's only Sebo who do them now - the K3, E3 and D4. However even the K3 is probably above your budget.

I have a bagged Miele cylinder as my main vacuum and a cordless bagless stick as a daily run around/quick pick up machine. There's no way the bagless stick could ever serve as my main vacuum. The Miele serves as a regular vacuum, DIY clean up machine, duster etc...has served me well for 9 years now and just keeps going and going. I cannot imagine the cordless stick I have lasting anything like as long - it's already feeling rickety and creaky after less than a year and I take good care of it. If you can afford it - Bagged corded vacuum for your main vacuum, cordless stick for a secondary run around.

M1 has a new bag system. It wouldn't surprise me if they're phasing out the Classic, as there are tons of dupes of those bags but not of the M1 bags (yet?). I like my M1 well enough, but it's my first bagged vac so I'm biased on that regard. But keep that in mind if you had any intention of going off-brand for bags.

I recently bought the M1 Cat & Dog. Can say it has a good suction. The building quality is good. It's 90% same as the legendary C3, but they changed the design a bit. It also feels comfy in the hand. The L1 has more "futuristic functions", but I think a standard vacuum like M1 will have a longer lifetime.

I see the appeal of a stick. I have a V15. It’s about 3 yrs old. It’s primary role is for in-between cleans, small messes. Touch-ups. But, if I am going to vac our main living areas or the entire house, I can get the job done a lot faster with my Miele. If I am going to deep clean the carpet, I don’t pre-vac with my V15. I use my Kirby. If I am going to detail a vehicle, Miele. If I am going to use attachments for deep cleaning, Miele.

It’s also important to differentiate between types of HEPA. Miele’s HEPA is H13+ and almost H14. It’s very rare to find H13 in vacuum’s, as most are H11 if they even have HEPA. Rainbows also utilize H13, but aren’t the easiest bags to use if used frequently. I would definitely get a Miele Complete C3, Complete C3, Guard M1 or L1 AllFloors, one with the Parquet Twister floor-head. It significantly better than the AllTeq and FiberTeq heads, and you can get an extra-wide version of it. For rug(s), the TurboTeQ head is sufficient for low pile area rugs.

The M1 seems actually more comparable to the C3, which is considered better actually, but it will be slightly heavier, I would recommend getting an M1 if you're willing since they're on sale right now close to your budget, but a C1 for under 500 would also be excellent.

First, I will tell you they are NOT cheap for most of them. A shark is going to cost you $100-120, a Miele may cost $300-1,000. You DO NOT need any of the high end ones unless you’ve got a **massive** house. Second I will add, that Miele vacuum is going to last you 10+ years if you do upkeep if you buy the canister one which is the easiest to maintain. I’d say upkeep on them is maybe 10% of the effort of a bagless one. With bags it quite seriously contains everything within, you mainly rinse out the vacuum hose and wipe down the inside - then the main routine part is cleaning the bristles and what not. To remove fur tangled in bristles, take a box cutter knife and run it down the middle slowly cutting off fur that is wrapped around it (only any vacuum). Also note that these vacuums are going to be bigger than an upright one if you go with the canister. As far as specific ones, Kenmore is going to be cheapest and most efficient for the canister vacuum, around $200-300. Kenmore Elite Pet Friendly CrossOver 21814, Kenmore 200 Series BC4002. For Miele, Guard M1 Cat & Dog which is around $500. With all being said, the bagless miele’s are still great and around $350. The one you’d want to explore more is Boost CX1 SNRD0 - it’s $300-400. If you prefer an upright, which is still way better than a stick vacuum, a Kenmore Elite Pet Friendly 31150 is about $200 and will be great. Also, your current one may have gunk in the tub or chamber which is why the fluff is clogging. You may want to try cleaning your vacuum first unless the motor was running too hard / it’s old.

But… that is all they’ve done? They fixed the bag problem (prob could’ve got away with keeping the old bags backwards compatible but they’re still better). The S1 and M1 *are* polished up C2 and C3 models, with a new grille and two less suction settings on the dial. I wouldn’t touch the L1 personally but that’s because I don’t like the design, that’s all. What more could they have done?

I'd go for the M1 Cat & Dog. It's a proven platform, quiet, not too big, and comes with the turbo head which will futureproof it against moving to a place that might have more carpet.

M1 is more compact, and has been around since 2011. L1 is a new platform that may have issues that haven't been worked out yet. It also lacks a premotor filter, which the M1 has.
