"I can confirm this was the case with both my Q950A and 990D. If you're a frequent music listener, you can run two cheap smart plugs to your rears and set up a scene to enable/disable them. ... what I believe is happening is an adjustment is taking place when the soundbar doesn't see the surrounds -- it's as if there's an additional parametric EQ or virtualized surround feature that is disabled when the surrounds aren't available. Which resulted in a more impactful and more cohesive frequency response when listening to music. ... That was my only real complaint with their 900 series sets. A small settings change in the menu, or even some system-wide awareness that allows switching to a different mode specifically for listening to music -- or even older Dolby 2.1 and stereo channel content from any source. ... but not having solid music playback was a tough pill to swallow."
"The subwoofer is weak and almost non existent."

"It’s a bit of a pain to get music onto them (convert YouTubes to mp3 or dig up your old iTunes library)"
These! Plus, I have the Open Swim Pro. Waterproof, and you can download to it because Bluetooth doesn't work underwater.
I have the OpenRun Pro and OpenSwim Pro, I can notice a difference in sound between the two (RunPro being better), but OpenSwim Pro are still great and have MP3 mode as well.
I really like my Shokz for this use case, less so for public transit commutes principally because it \_doesn't\_ block enough ambient noise. As an unfortunate aside, my 2021 Shokz just died, or are close to dead. Waiting for customer support to get back to me with an outcome. This pair lasted about 4 years (6 weeks shy really) and the pair before that lasted less, about 2.5 years. They got heavy use, and I'm not surprised that something I sweated in daily at least 8 months of the year eventually gave up the ghost, but those are my observations. I'll be buying another pair, in any case.
I have the non Bluetooth swimming ones and they sound horrendous (but better than nothing for swimming). What’s the sound profile like? Especially the bass?
I have the waterproof Shockz and the audio is so bad (but great for swimming)
Check out Shokz if you're open to the bone conduction technology. Not good for laying in bed or in noisy environments. But awesome for sports, conf calls, talking on the phone, music, podcast, etc.
Shokz Open Swim Pro, all the way.
Try shokz open ear headphones. I have the openswim pro set and it’s superb for swimming cycling and running and allows me to keep audio awareness on the move.
If you buy expecting an immersive, noise cancelling experience, you’ll be disappointed… the product is trying to achieve the exact opposite… on the Openswim Pro (and earlier Opensiwm model) there is a basic swimming mode / regular mode toggle setting that alters the audio to suit wearing ear plugs or not (in swim mode it’s best to wear)… I found that in the gym I enjoy using them, but the in either of the aforementioned settings the volume can max out a bit low when there’s a lot of noise around me. Then again they are more secure than EarPods and more comfortable than over ear options, so tend to be my go-to regardless.
Shokz, buy the open swim, less quality but significantly better for rainy days. Or just airpod pro, well only cons is stinky earwax
I ended up buying the shockz openswim cause I want to be able to have playlists and shuffle and whatnot so hopefully I made the right decision!
The openswim haedphones I purchased are mp3 player no Bluetooth so they don’t support streaming, I’d assume the openswim pros would as they support Bluetooth for running, the way I downloaded my songs from Spotify is an app called deemix
